However the language was somewhat excessive. TOO repetitive...but I guess they talk that way in Vegas. The lady I saw this with was inclined to walk out in the early part. Then this is your movie. I thought it was a good film, but there were some lulls. If you like to see some good acting, it is in this movie. Perhaps you can save your money and rent the video when it comes out. Use your savings for a trip to Vegas, but stay away from the Cooler. Was this review helpful? The cinematography is very effective. Bernie appears to be a loser and works as a cooler, essentially a jinx, in an aging Vegas casino. We follow his luck during the movie and are prompted to ask if luck really is fate, or its something we construct. Concurrently we explore the merits of tradition and of modernity. What is the best way to cope with the new: bow out or fight? The Cooler is violent, gritty and very real; but like life, not entirely dark. Was this review helpful? William Macy and Maria Bello provide convincing performances of the typical grunts of Vegas never pictorialized in most Vegas films. Alec Baldwin's acting has matured nicely with this one. Love the surprise ending. This film does a great job of truly characterizing Las Vegas. Las Vegas is mass marketed as lights, action, games, food, suites, high rolling...but is in reality low down, spiritless, greedy, and smells of old booze & cigarette smoke. From start to finish, this film displays the true ugly-everything about Las Vegas. Surprisingly very well done. Was this review helpful? Sign In 20 out of 22 users found this helpful The CoolerPosted: 10/25/2003A review of The Cooler by luvyoga2 I saw this movie in preview at the Hamptons Film Festival and liked it very much. Each actor played their part to perfection. Lots of plot twists, just when it seems predictable, you get a surprise that sometimes shocks, which keeps your interest, and leaves you waiting for what will happen next. It has it's funny parts, which are quite unpredictable. The chemistry between Bill Macy and Maria Bello is totally believable. He's a loser, she's employed by the casino owner to keep him around, they fall in love, his luck changes, and that's when the film really takes off. Alec Baldwin, as the casino owner, is supurb in this role. Just psychotic enough to pull it off as only he can. Wayne Kramer directed this film to perfection. I highly recommend this film, I'm sure that no one who sees it will be disappointed. Was this review helpful? A movie for anyone who's ever felt like a poor schmuck. Well, you're about to meet Bernie Lootz, who actually is the most unluckiest person in the world.
