I was particularly touched by the scenes set in the Sudan, which made a brave attempt to tell the story of a genocide I have been campaigning against since before the film was released. The acting is brilliant, the love story between Justin and Tessa a beautiful journey of discovery and understanding, and the backdrop of poverty-stricken Africa juxtaposed with the meaningless bureaucracy of the West a fantastic observation of the current situation. Charlones camerawork captures the vibrancy and reality of African life, which is contrasted sharply against the desperate conditions, a true reflection of the strength of willpower alone in survival. The real strength of this film is in its ability to involve you emotionally (I sat and cried for twenty minutes as the credits rolled by). Ignore the reviews that rate this film poorly - they have been written by those who do not care about the world in which they live, and those who have no appreciation of true human emotion and beauty. Watch this film and be amazed by its superb portrayal of the world. Was this review helpful? The scenes of the Africa landscape and people were wonderful.
This is not a movie where they will not come back for more. Was this review helpful? Ive read the book and while most movies inspired by books often have to compromise on material, this movie did nothing of the sort
What was presented was presented well
And seldom has a movie touched me like this one did
Quayles search to understand the wife he had loved so much, Tessas quest to save her beloved people and the raw evil of people who would choose to eliminate anyone who stood against them-all well captured and the casting choices were brilliant too. John Le Carres novel tells of the daily travesties that occur in Africa, and the worlds ignorance of them. Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz portray the two main characters perfectly, capturing the tragic love story underneath all the political turmoil, and in the end it is their love which allows them to uncover a horrible plot that exploits the desperation of the African people. A heartbreaking but important film that everybody must see. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 3/6/2006A review of The Constant Gardener by gostof I think that the whole movie was very interesting. It took a bit of work to catch on to the plot but ounce you see how it is works. It starts with a sceen of an airport and a lady telling her husband in three days shell see him, and not to worry.
She gets murdered. It then escalates to a film about the mistreatment of people in Africa. How drug companies use Africans as geunie pigs. The ending is very shocking and slightly sad. But over all it is a good movie. Was this review helpful? I like both Fiennes and Weisz, and the critics wrote enthusiastic reviews, and I could hardly wait to see this film. But it was not entertaining. It was slow and labored, told out of order in flashbacks, the cinematography was stark and more suitable to a documentary, and it was unrelentingly tragic. You may feel good about feeling bad when you leave the theatre because the film reflects your personal politics and views of the corporate business world, but irregadless you will leave the theatre feeling bad. This movie stinks, it was slow, boring and the filming was horrible, it was jerky and supposed to be artistic, but it just made me dizzy. Dont waste your money wait for it to come on tv, and when you have trouble sleeping turn it on. Was this review helpful? From the slow......oh so painfully slow pace, to the pregnancy, it was just the worst since I went in expecting some kind of spy movie only to be slapped in the face with a shitty film. The moral of the film is that money and greed will and can corrupt even the honourable men. For those who might find this type of movie very sedatingly boring because you need a serious amount of concentration on the plot from the opening minute to the very end. Its also saying that when a film maker uses or overrelies on the use of special effects computer generated or not(with the exception of Star Wars, Lord of The Rings) can really lose the appeal of the audience you trying to reach.
Worth my 10 to see this film, go see it while you can
one last comment before I end my review, WASSAP with the R rating for this movie? It got a M rating in Australia and New Zealand Was this review helpful? If only more people could see this film and understand the beautiful messages within such a tragic story. Unfortunately I think too many, retreat inside their comfort zone the minuet anything challenges them to think about the brutality outside their cosy world. It is so much easier to pretend we cant see and think that our small contribution would be worthless. But this film shows us that even if there is just one, that is still one person that we can help.
It is beautiful to see the love Tessa shows for Justin and that which he has for her by the end. Our suspicions are easily aroused by the secrecy, with which she guards her work and her easy relationships with others. But instead these are actually a testament to her love, protection and complete trust. The lack of vengeance for Tessas death is somehow insignificant with this realisation. How can we expect tolerance, acceptance and love if we are so naturally mistrustful?
Although the handheld camera work can be disorientating at times, it portrays the bustle, joy and vibrancy of the location and people fantastically. Along with the reality of the actors makeup-less faces it gives the movie a gritty authenticity that challenges our contentment with the cosy world. Four out of the ten people at the showing I was at, left the moment the credits appeared, the rest of us however were rooted to the spot. (An encouraging percentage I suppose, in slough!) In LeCarre's rich tradition of espionage, betrayal and sacrifice "The Constant Gardiner" weaves a story of love and personal tragedy with a diplomat and his young activist wife. Both serve on the British High Commission in Kenya, he as a diplomat and she as a health care monitor and advisor who discovers that a new drug in test while effective at preventing a new strain of TB also is frequently fatal. The truth about the drug's effects have been supressed by a cabal of the drug manufacturer and corrupt members of the British foreign service.
Ralph Fiennes finds that his Young wife has been brutally murdered and investigates dispite advice from official services who pass off her death as the actions of bandits. Rachel Weisz, as the activist wife shines in the role of intrepid investigator murdered for her discoveries. Fiennes, follows the clues through Africa and Europe untill he finds the heart wrenching truth, and sacrifices all in true LeCarre style.
Excellent acting all around and while it does not qualify for an "action Adventure" with massive special effects, It is spell binding in its complexity and conclusion.
Highly recomended. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 10/8/2005A review of The Constant Gardener by stupidpieceofsh1t This movie was very, very, very bad. The camera work was not only bad, but borderlining awful. The acting was dull and uninspired. The plot was simple and boring. The action was non-existent. The "twists" of the plot were easily deciphered. This movie would be a great cure for insomniacs. This movie was boring beyond belief. If you enjoyed this movie, I would also recommend that you go outside to your backyard and watch the grass grow. I would say there's about the same amount of thrill in both watching grass grow and this piece of trash flick, The Constant Gardener. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
