Posted: 1/7/2006A review of The Changeling by Barrhaven_Jeff
Ive seen this movie so many times that it doesnt give me the chills the way it used to, but it still remains a creepy ghost story and an effective murder-mystery as well. George C. Scott is superb in the title role, and the rest of the cast are great as well. I remember first watching this film, and I literally felt shivers down my back during certain scenes ( Like when Scotts character is listening to the tape recording of the seance ). The added bonus of a creative and intriguing plot makes this film a must see, if you havent seen it. Dont watch it alone.

Unlike so many of today's ghost stories and horror movies, The Changling is terrifying without the unneeded hype. It has no gratuitous violence and no gore. What is does have is the power to keep a viewer glued to her seat, with her hand over her mouth, waiting to see what will happen next. The first time I saw this movie, I was impressed by its ability to scare me into sleeping with the lights on, without any slicing and dicing. In the vein of such classics as Psycho, it is the storyline, the tension, and the suspense which grab the veiwer's attention, fill her with a sense of dread and can occasionally make her jump and yell out. It's just good, scary fun.

I thought that the movie had everything a good ghost story should. Mystery about who the ghost was and the eerie feeling that the ghost wanted help but at the same time could hurt you. The wheelchair was the prop that brought everything together! Hair raising, yell out loud fright...it is all in this one.
