i'm a huge matt damon fan and have enjoyed some of the work of terry gilliam, so i thought 99 cents wasn't much of a risk of a rental. but, man, can i get my 99 cents back? the writing was struggling to get every possible grimm's fairy tale reference possible... including a bizarre scene where a tar baby comes to life from a water well, inhales a small boy and then somehow becomes the 'ya can't catch me, i'm the gingerbread man' who starts to eat himself. they even steal the voice of the gingerbread man from shrek. good god, it was awful. put that together with almost countless acts of animal cruelty as humor -- lighting horses on fire, kicking a kitten into a spinning blade, trying to run over geese about a dozen times... an anti-ode to mother goose?, reference to gutting a pig, the heroine being an animal trapper who pulls the skin off a rabit while the brothers grimm feign nausea. it's like gilliam was eeking revenge on a relationship he had with someone who cared about animals... a relationship gone bad. i don't know, but hurting helpless animals for human entertainment seems perverted and it was completely unnecessary as it didn't add to the plot one bit. that makes it even more perverted. i think the premise is interesting and somehow they got top actors to play along. but don't waste even 99 cents and the hours of your life you'll want back.

Actually Cavaldy is not Robin Williams - it's Peter Stormare

This movie is poorly made, in my opinion. After Brokeback mountain and the Bourne movies, I thought pretty highly of Heath Ledger and Matt Damon. But now, I think twice.. Of course, it might not be their fault. The part that pissed me off the most was the ending. It was like, all of a sudden they bring in the sleeping beauty law and solve everyones problem that way. and there you go, the fu!!ing cliche did it all -everyones alive, no one is falling in love, and Im bored to tears at how I wasted two hours on this thing. Only films like Moulin Rouge can get away with such silliness and make it work.

Ive see the bad and have seen the worst and this movie isnt one of my favorites if you havent seen this film you arent mising out too much, you probably know the brothers grimm who have written some of the most popular fairy tales little red riding hood Rumpelstiltskin and other famous and memorable works. The movie wasnt the worst but it was just plain silly and some scenes were unnecessary and just really stupid the film trys much to hard to be funny and some of the scenes were just bizzare The special effects were somewhat passable but let me just say it ive seen better. If you like fantasy and movies with enchantment this is something you might wanna see but to be honest there is hell alot of better movies out there than this one it 2 out 5 stars

Well well if you have build a picture of the movie by watching the trailor ...you will be slightly disapointed after watching it -- i think . The movie evolves arround the two brothers and a world of fantasy. The movie lacks constant flow and some of the character may annoy you. But overall if you want entertainment without using your thoughts then go and watch the movie you will have good 2 hours.

The movie starts off ok. It then looks like the director fell asleep. There is nothing that really catches your attention. Save your money. The actors are good, but the story could use some work.

To keep this plain and simple, this movie was great, and Id love a sequel if it kept true to original actors. For those that said there was no storyline, no plot...they must not have been paying attention. Two average brothers, with no true magic of their own except the magic of their storyweaving, set out to save a town and the towns children against real evil powers. Of course there is the obligatory beautiful girl to win, but what a shock that she is just as much a heroine in this story and independant to boot! Not overdone at all. The movie was meant to be as silly as it is dark and my kids loved it too. Its not gory, if you want gore, go watch any number of war movies out on the market now, and its dark aspect is really more like grey..... I think the animal cruelty aspect that most people are going on about is not about the poor cute kitty, who really was adorable for its three second bit, but in the trappers skinning of the animals. Come on!!!! The movie is set in the early 1800s. People lived by furs, and meats and it was a neccissity back then. Are we really going to hide that history and pretend the world is and always was full of vegetarians and wool, not fur to keep people warm??? Gross yes, but did it override the whole movie? Not at all. And were the animals tortured? No. So on that note, get over it. And for all else, who like a little bit of edge of your seat nonsense no and then, go watch the movie. It was great.

When I saw the previews for the movie, it looked as though it would be great to see. I was sadly mistaken. I received a copy of the film as a gift and now I regret having even opened it. I normally enjoy Matt Damon and Heath Ledger! I feel that the amount of sick, dark humor was extremely disturbing. I am glad that I watched this before anyone else in my family saw it! How on earth can anyone let their kids watch this garbage?!?! The rating for this movie shows just what exactly is wrong with society today. If people consider that allowing 13-year-old impressionable minds to watch people and animals being tortured and mutilated, bodiless heads, etc., then I have great concern for the future of our youth!!! I feel sad that what was meant to be a thoughtful gift, has now become trash because, I for one, will not be part of it! What a truly disappointing waste of talent.

The movie was okay. Not the greatest from either of the main actors, but I was not bored out of my mind. I liked the logic of the crypts and how the actors played off of each other. If you didnt understand the beans, pay more attention! Jake was living in a fantasy world, thinking that the tales were true, just like the beans. Will however, did not think this, and because the beans did not help his sister, he was being cynical. And the cat was fake everyone! It was proving that Cavaldi was flighty and odd, and it did just that. I did enjoy this movie. I liked the darker twist.

i dont see why theres this big contoversy over the cat being abused its a movie....... it wasnt real! neways I thought how the movie ran around made it kind of confusing but i understood it just fine ive seen it twice. So over all this movie could use some changes, but i loved the plot the things they through in and jokes thrown into it too. matt Damon and Heath Ledger were Awesome! And how they didnt make it so much about who got the girl was thought through very well. So if you havent seen the movie I invise you to. It kept my attention on the edge of my seat.......

i sat last night and watched this movie and i fount it quite pleasant. it was a darker and funnier version of the known fairytales we know which this was most delightful. a good job by the director and script writer and an amazing job by monica belluci, mat damon and heath ledger.

This film was a good old-fashioned fantasy romp, plain and simple. Its a popcorn movie, and I found it very entertaining. And so here I go and read the review, and people are all bawling about a fake kitten getting minced. Come on! Oh, we dont care about the torture devices used on humans, they can all die slow and painful, albeit fake, deaths, but not the kitty! Wah!!!!!!!! Get a life. I like kitties, but props are wonderful things. Anyways, the movie itself was good and dark, and the twisted spin on the fairy tales, and intermingling them into one story, was awesome. The writing was solid and kept my attention, the actors did fine jobs in their craft (especially the Italian torturer, he was phenomenal) and the typical dark scary forest looked like it came out of a nightmarish pop up book. Good stuff. All the people that bitch about the boring cimeatography or so-called scant storylines are people who sit around analyzing films and making me rent garbage like Last Days, which is an hour and a half of mumbling and boredom....oh no wait, thats elliptical cinema...right. Thanks for nothing. Id recommend this movie to anyone who isnt watching it with little kids, I thought it was a lot of fun. And anyone who boycotts fear and loathing or any other gilliam picture can go home, put their head between their legs, and have a sit-down.

I watched Terry Gilliams The Brothers Grimm. I am sickened and appalled at the use of animal cruelty as humor. The scene where a fluffy kitten gets chopped up in a machine is totally unacceptable. It does not add anything to the story and is clearly added as a sick attempt for humor. I am familiar with Terry Gilliams previous work and feel this is a new and disturbing low. Animal cruelty is not funny. I recommend a boycott of this movie and all of Gilliams work. Animal rights groups have worked too long and hard to stop animal abuse to allow this kind of warped humor to be used. We need to show that we will not stand for this kind of treatment of animals in films. It is simply not acceptable.

I cannot believe I wasted five dollars on this movie, it was the worst movie I have seen in a long time. There was no plot, the situation didn't even make sense, the charecters were a flop. I highly reccomend not seeing this movie.
