The actors were way better, too. The old Spiderman was too whiny. Andrew Garfield did really well as the new Spiderman. This movie had more action and entertainment than the others, too. Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/30/2012A review of The Amazing Spider-Man by Blackfury_Rises Finally a superhero action film that isn't blown out of proportions with giant action scenes and big budget movie all-stars. Marc Webb understands that pleasing the fans shouldn't be a top priority. His priority should be making a good film.
Webb starts with a charming, heart-filled and talented cast. Andrew Garfield, who recently got robbed an Oscar for his performance in The Social Network. Emma Stone, from widely known good films such as The Help and Zombieland. Also throw in Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Sally Field, and Rhys Ifans to portray Uncle Ben, George Stacy, Aunt May, and Dr. Connors respectively.
Webb also understands that effects should never be the center focus of a film. So he uses his greatest strength to help reel audiences in: giving characters motivation, conflicts, and consequences to portray intelligent young-adult drama. This version of Peter Parker is an intelligent, brave, and deep character who slowly grows into the role of being a superhero. And the new love interest, Gwen Stacy, is an actual character, who is smarter than Peter and actually fights the villain in an intense encounter.
The action is also story driven. There is no mindless explosion because there's an opportunity for it. There is no super drawn out fight because the budget allows it. Each encounter happens for a reason. Spidey fights the Lizard over a giant sewer conjunction because he's going to take down Connors after the police refuse to. In return, Connors strikes back with his alter ego, and attacks Peter at his own school to make sure he isn't ambushed ever again. Each fight lasts about a few minutes or so, giving you a lot of quick, breathtaking visuals rather than a few dragging, super long ones that lack energy.
The only place the film struggles is the final act, where the film relies on a giant fight atop a huge, shiny set piece to wow the audience, after such a smart ride up to the climax, something more personal should have been used instead. Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/20/2012A review of The Amazing Spider-Man by ThePlainTruthNC In addition to my review title, I would add poor casting with the selection of Emma Stone as Spidey's love interest. Now, she is generally a fine actress. However, she doesn't hide her age well. I know she is only 23 but, she looks every day of it. In addition, in this film, she just can't seem to pull off the typical demeanor of a 17 year old. Her attempts look concocted and unnatural. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield as Spiderman does a much better job passing as a high school student despite his 28 years. Plus, he is cute and pulls off a charming awkwardness in his scenes with Emma that is sure to make him the subject of many teenaged girl's fantasies. However, one scene between the two lead characters taking place in the high school hallway looked amateurish, improvised and, was allowed to continue way to long.
The story line is barely satisfactory. Sadly, from how he obtains his powers to their development compares unfavorably to the Tobey McGuire version. Surprisingly, even though I am sure CG I has improved immensely since McGuire played the lead role, I didn't feel that same roller coaster rush as the camera assumes a first person view of Spiderman swinging through the streets of New York. Bottom line, if you have seen the McGuire version, especially on the big screen, you're probably going to be disappointed. However, given the lackluster selection of movies this summer and, if you're determined to see a movie this weekend, you could do much worse. Was this review helpful? I think that it could have been better in terms of the scenes. Was this review helpful? If you submit feedback on this review in the future, we will overwrite your previous feedback. Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/15/2012A review of The Amazing Spider-Man by over-the-rainbow2 The first half of the movie is wonderful. It is well cast, connects plausible sci-fi with the comic book story, is well written, photgraphed and developed wonderfully. Then comes the spiderman vs lizard man stuff. The special effects are cheesy, too much time is spent on repetitious conflict scenes, and even the music is awful. After much too long on that, it goes back and completes the story, with one important element of what's to come after the first half of the credits (huh?....most people missed that). It's a shame that those who edited the movie didn't realize (1) less is more and (2)mediocre special effects are boring. Was this review helpful? 1-it is a bit slow to start as a few others mentioned......but that is because they're doing what is called "character development" people! Even though we know the story, a GOOD MOVIE lays out the ACTUAL STORY so we are all on the same page and actually CARE about what happens to the people in the movie.
Instead of complaining that it's "slow", why not RELAX, SIT BACK AND JUST ENJOY A GOOD, WELL-LAID OUT MOVIE?
2-my husband and I were worried specifically about the change of main characters--not always a good sign when the original actors don't want to return!! BUT we were PLEASANTLY SURPRISED by the great acting talents Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone (cute couple!) Of course, the other actors, and acting ,were good, as well. We were just relieved that our worries were unfounded.
3-the movie has a nicely-paced storyline, good character development, sweet-shy-cute romance, great action scenes, and nice 3-D effects (I actually jumped back a few times!)
4-the TRUE TEST is if my husband likes it since he is SUPERCRITICAL OF MOVIES in general, and has a very high standard as to what passes for a "good" movie.........so when I asked him later in the car.....he said he thought it was REALLY GOOD!!! and I agreed!!
If you are ready to sit back and RELAX and just ENJOY a movie that actually has a good story, solid acting, a hero, a villain, romance, and action, to boot, then you are in for a treat!! The main actors have some real chemistry, though they are a departure from the original cast. Garfield is a more punk and actually teenage version of Spiderman, which I thought made a lot more sense than McGuire's sort of soft Parker. Stone also provided a much less damsel in distress love interest. While the villain was not the most original, he provided a good spring board for a Green Goblin in future movies ( did you really want them to start with the same one as the first set of movies. Best of all this movie is far more faithful to the comic. Was this review helpful? If you submit feedback on this review in the future, we will overwrite your previous feedback. Sign in 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/9/2012A review of The Amazing Spider-Man by Screenwriter11 This is an awful remake of what was a fine original movie. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield have childlike conversations and about a dozen awkward-boy/girl-moments where they giggle at each other instead of talking, Sally Fields and Martin Sheen are flat and unimpressive and Sheen comes off as if he was still in the West Wing. The plot is a hybrid of the first two Spiderman movies and is preposterous at best, such as the Lizard/mad-scientist/villian sets up a full medical research lab in the NYC sewer system!?!?!!? There are a number of story lines that lead nowhere, like why are there dozens of tiny lizards running all over the streets and sewers of NYC for no obvious reason that furthers the story? Spidie attempts fo find Uncle Ben's murderer and all he does is beat up one street thug after another, does not find the murderer but is viewed as a vigilante by the police and some obscure PD captain issues an arrest warrant for Spidie. Unfortunately police captains can't issue warrants of any kind and in this one there's even no allegation of what crime Spidie has committed. The ending is so beyond any reason or common sense that it makes Aliens look totally plausiable. I'd bug out on this film and not even wait for it to come out on DVD. Was this review helpful? Sign in 2 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 7/7/2012A review of The Amazing Spider-Man by Blue Jay of Blue Jay The first hour was an excellent film. Since it was a remake, it was great spending time with the development of Peter into Spider-man. If they would cut out or shorten some of action sequences in the second hour this would make a great love story. The relationship between Gwen and Peter is what drives this movie and they should have spent more time with that. The bad guy {Lizard man] really asn't bad enough. Lazy story development on that end. As an action movie the Avengers was much better, but if they turned this into more of a romantic action movie it would move from Excellent to Great. Was this review helpful? Sign in 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 7/7/2012A review of The Amazing Spider-Man by D Miles I agree that people can only take so much of retelling the origin of a well known superhero. However, this Spiderman origin story did a much better job in showcasing the complexities of everyday life challenges with the challenge of suddenly being endowed with superpowers. I appreciate that this version didn't shy away from showing a Peter Parker having a very tough time dealing with apparent abandonment issues and the incredible pain of losing people despite having great power and trying your best. These things add to the character and thus, lends an opportunity to explore other aspects of the story.
This version also does what no other Spiderman origin story has ever bothered to dare ask and that is, "How the hell did Peter ever end up with Uncle Ben and Aunt May in the first place?" Exploring Peter's parents, specifically his father, Richard Parker, provides a rich, fertile ground to tell new stories, which is an exciting prospect to say the least.
I'm glad that the black and white days where you just have these perfect good guys versus inexplicable and nakedly evil guys are done. In truth, there are a lot grays in life and this version does an excellent job in exploring the complex emotional motivation(s) of both the protagonist and antagonist. Was this review helpful? I only stayed so that I could get a good laugh at how bad it was. The rest of the audience spent half the movie checking out their facebook account. It was written for teens who like the Twighlight series.Spiderman would never walk around with a backpack, stop in the middle of a fight to answer his cellphone, etc. Save your money or go just to see how bad a movie can be. Very dissapointing. Those people that gave me this movie a good rating must not have seen the movie. You can tell.
And the critics review on MSN from Metacritic.com were from the old Spiderman movie with Maguire and Dunst because they're mentioning their names. Who are they fooling? Was this review helpful?
