The Alamo was probably the most realistic version yet brought to the big screen. One can nit pick anything, but although some history was probably altered a little, the whole idea is to tell the story from a more personal view. BBT accurately portrayed a Crockett who came to Texas thinking the fighting was over and found himself trapped inside the crumbling walls. Patric played a darkly sinister Bowie, which one can't help but think is probably more accurate that Richard Widmark's portrayal. You have to remember Bowie was dying, he knew it. He had already lost his wife and kids and although he had done so much in his life (slave trading and land speculating), he was tired of living. Travis character was, I believe, pretty right on. He was a hot-head, but certainly no coward. None of the men at the Alamo were cowards, on either side. I think the defining shot was the shot of the young Mexican soldier right before he shot Travis. You could tell he was scared to death, but did his job anyway. I think that is pretty indicative of all the men at the battle, notables or not, Texican or Mexican. Seguin was accurately portrayed as well as Esparza as two Mexican soldiers with divided loyalties. I guess the point is that we can surmise a lot of things about what did or did not happen, but as there were minimal survivors to the battle from within the walls, mostly women and children, no one will really know the truth requiring us to draw our own conclusions with the help of Hollywood. Billy Bob Thornton made this movie with his portrayal of Davy Crockett. Was this review helpful? Well it fell far short of those movies. Disney should have let Ron Howard direct it. The set was awsome, but not 100% accurate. To much of the movie was cut out, and left the viewer hanging. It is true we glorify the defenders and some of them were criminals. However the remaining defenders were fighting for the original promise of 1824. Santa Ana was a dictator, and the Texans and Tejanos were fighting against that as we in America would. I agree the Mexicans were fighting for their land, but Tejanos who were of Mexican decent were fighting for their rights which was promised them in the Constitution of 1824. Anyway the movie did leave a lot to be desired. Not enough background leading up to the Texas Rebellion. The battle scenes could have been longer, such as the battle for the Long Barracks. The Battle of San Jacinito was poor and not very accurate. Much more could have been done there. Even though I gave this Alamo movie only 3 stars, it would be worth seeing and adding to your collection, if you are an Alamo buff. Was this review helpful? Some parts didn't go along with the story that I thought the Alamo was, but that's OK. Some more parts had good acting, Billy-bob Thorton was good because he knew his lines real well and he didn't even sound or look like Billy-bob. Now, Bowie, I could have played his part, because he pretty much laid in a bed the whole entire time. For these reasons, over all, I loved it. Was this review helpful? Here's what's good:
It has plenty of legendary stuff and some historical stuff, such as Davy Crockett being the last defender and Juan Seguin's part in the story. The performances from Billy Bob Thornton and the actors for Colonel Travis, Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, and Santa Anna are all brilliant, especially Billy's, who plays Davy Crockett. The action isn't great, but it's good and historical and legendary.
Here's what's not so good:
When Travis drew the line in the dirt with his sword, all should have crossed it except for a man named Moses Rose. And the Yellow Rose lady didn't come until San Jacinto with Santa Anna in his tent. And the attack on San Jacinto was a surprise. And the times and dates are off a bit. The Mexican music "El Deguello" didn't come until before the attack of the Alamo. That was it, the filmmakers missed alot of historical fact.
But other than that, the movie's a blast! It had everything that you could possibly want in a movie. This was one of the most accurate portrayals of the account at the Alamo every put on film. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful The Alamo is a remake of the 1960 film about the Texans stand against the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna during the Texas Revolution in 1836. I felt the movie did a great job retelling the story about how the Texans got their independence. In two hours not only do you see a great movie, but you also learn about an interesting part of history. After this movie even you will "remember the Alamo".

Was this review helpful? Oh and the 20 minute battle scene with dennis Quaid that in real History lasted 8 minutes... which it even says in the movie for Christ's sake Was this review helpful? This movie shows an excellent outline of drama and battle scenes, accompanied with an outstanding cast. Yes, I know; we're all a little skeptical of Billy Bob Thorton. But I think he portrayed David Crockett terrifically. His fiddle-playing talent also added a bit of interest to his character, rather than the movie being a history lesson. I think we've all had one too many of those. ;) I totally suggest this movie to anyone who loves action, battle, strategy, and doesn't mind a little blood. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Oh, I so wanted this to be a great movie! It was....OK. It's a shame Disney decided to make a "family-friendly" version instead of allowing Ron Howard to make the John Sayles scripted version. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Billy Bob Thornton's portrayal of Crockett, he made the movie. I thought Patrick Wilson was a a bit wooden as Travis; I always imagined Travis as over-the-top. Patric was a great Bowie, portraying him as the not-so-heroic and more-than-a-little-sinister fellow he actually was. The actor who played Santa Ana was a low point--more leering caricature than character. The editors cut away too much of the story, many parts such as Bonham and Seguin were truncated to the point you thought "who are these guys?", and those unfamiliar with Texas history don't realize their importance to the effort. And there was mention a couple of times about Goliad, but no explanation of the horror that took place there (Houston's men shouted "Remember Goliad" as well at San Jacinto). There were a couple of times I almost expected the characters to turn to the camera and exclaim: "Oh, s***, what am I doing here?!" The look of the film was magnificent--I do appreciate the fact Hancock and his crew remained faithful to history as far as set design and costuming, but it's too bad the same attention wasn't given to the script. If you know history then the movie has no surprises but it is well written and moves along well despite its lengthy duration. Billy Bob Thornton adds color and humor to this film in his portrayal of the Tennessean David Crockett. I was not impressed with the final battle scenes of San Jacincto which needed a few hundred more soldiers on each side to be realistic. Also, in fairness, General Lopez Santa Anna was portrayed as an aged tyrant when in fact he was a dashing, young gentleman of only 42 at the time of the war. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful This film is way too long. There is one insignificantly signifant battle scene that concludes the movie. Don't waste your money on this piece of trash. I would rather watch last of the mohigans 25 times. Was this review helpful? (Hard to believe of Hollywood!) But it did put the whole Alamo thing in a good historical perspective for me and I do like watching the History Channel, so it was good for me. Please do remember that the Mexican's were trying to "steal" back from the United States what we had previously stolen from them. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
