Dont get me wrong, I dont smoke, I think its a disgusting habit but do we seriously have to watch a movie about people trying to be clever about how gross smoking is. Maybe it got better after the first fifteen minutes but I couldnt take it anymore I turned it off before I got so bored that I fell asleep. Was this review helpful? While trying to remain a role model for his son he must fight a pro-cigarette publicity campaign.
Thank You For Smoking reminds me of I Heart Huckabees (2004). Two comedies where I laughed only maybe two or three times but loved the movies. Thank You for Smoking is a satire that works in two ways it is a comedy but also takes you inside the tobacco companies that adds more comedy to the film.
Thank You For Smoking is a smart film. It is not trying to tell you to start smoking because everyone knows or should know that smoking can kill you. The main point of the film is well I cant really pick out a point or a target at because like I said before this is a satire and it does not need a point.
You know I wish that I could give half stars to reviews because every time I want to give a movie one and a half stars or two and half stars I cant. And for this movie I am giving it four and a half stars. Now I cant show that on the star line but if you read my review then you know that I have giving Thank You For Smoking four and a half stars.
I hate two see good movies do bad in the box office and I hate to see bad movies do good at the box office and Thank You For Smoking really has not done a great job bringing in the cash.
I truly did enjoy this film and I have proudly added it to my DVD collection. I think that Thank You For Smoking will be a movie that will not be forgotten. Or at least I wont for get about it. It had passion, perfectly executed tongue-in-cheek wit, solid writing and a style all its own. Its pace and twists left you craving another scene.
The actors were solid, and the writing and direction was beautifully synchornized.
The plot was not over the top and it had enough drama to it to keep the humanity in what was going on and it brought an essence of morality, but left it open for you to make your own mind up.
I recommend this to anyone who likes to poke fun at how ridiculous our society can be and who wants a movie to challenge us to reconsider why we do what we do on a daily basis.
you critics can keep your thumbs, im putting my hands up to this movie because i was surrendered to its ideals and sharp humor. Was this review helpful? THe Supporting Actors were outstanding. Willian H Macy plays a Senator from Vermont with just the right mix of frustrated do-gooder homespun reformer and ambitious political climber. J. K. Simmons plays an intense corporate backstabber and crazed loon and all though the performance you can see he thoughougly enjoyed it. Robert Duvall plays a tobacco barron with a heart of gold(yeah, its mechanical). Rob Lowe plays a high powered movie product placement promoter with the right amount of eastern mysticism and BS.The lobbyists that made up the MOD Squad were hysterical and I loved the forum of the seedy bar that had an Algonquin round table feel to it. Katie Holms was terrific as the under cover reporter. Adam Brody plays a minor character who escorts the central characters to Rob Lowes office and his performance albeit ephemeral is hard to forget. If thats not enogh, Sam Elliot plays a former Marlboro Man dying of lung cancer and his contribution is few scenes but he also paints a very complex character.
THe Central Characters father and son acted in tandem and delivered flawless performances. Aaron Eckhardt plays a hated tobbacco lobbyist who is tring to raise his son and pay the mortgage. His acting is subtle and personable. This is a remarkable performance of a character that could have played it just for laughs and been successful. Cameron Bright, playing his son, is an child actor to keep an eye on.
THe writing and direction of this movie was ouitstanding. If you have a sence of humor this is a must see movie. If you dont have a sence of humor this is also a must see movie because it works as a comedy and a heartwarming drama. And who knows? You might leave the movie theatre with a new found sence of humor. Was this review helpful? I might have a different impression after seeing it a second time but I think this is an empowering movie for smokers who oftentimes are treated as second class citizens for making the choice to light up. There are few dull moments in this movie and the audience laughed throughout. Was this review helpful? And no, I dont have stock in the film, nor am I sleeping with the Director. My wife and I saw the film and both of us enjoyed the movie and had intelligent conversations afterwards pertaining to it as we often do after reading good literature. If you didnt like this film, perhaps you didnt get it or you just werent in the mood for thought provoking film and should have gone to some horror flick. Was this review helpful? A group of us went to see this together. Age range was 22 - 73 - and there were seven of us. All of us thought this movie was awful (no, none of us are smokers). It was literally, one exceptionally long anti-cigg. commerical with only the bare essence of a story. And to whatever extent the story was present, it was incredibly boring. Was this review helpful? It was very funny, yet smart because of the irony involved. It is most definitely the best movie I have seen this year. See this movie. Its worth the time. I mean, how many adaptations have you seen that have been just as good (or even better) than the book?? Oh--and buy the book too. The book is very good. Was this review helpful? It was one of the few movies out today that I was not checking my watch to see how much longer. Go see this movie if you are looking for a smart, funny and witty comedy that is unlike most movies today. Was this review helpful? It allowed for smoking awareness to get out and create and hour of great fun. It is definitely one of those laughs out loud comedies that will keep you entertained all the way through. With a great cast and brilliant witty jokes a must see for the beginning of the summer movie season. Was this review helpful? Yah, some parts were funny and witty, but overall, I thought it was really kind of slow and boring. Was this review helpful?
