The movie was a political statement on the appropriate use of military strength. The main character made a consciencious choice to risk his carreer and the men he cared about to use all the training and resources at his disposal in order to oppose an obvious evil. I often hear folks say, Oh, those people have been doing that stuff to each other for centuries. Well, I say, Centuries are long enough for any peoples to suffer. If they havent stopped tormenting each other by now, the time is overdue for the rest of the world to step in and put a stop to it! The graphic, shocking scenes of torture in the movie are nothing in comparison to the hideous realities taking place today in numerous hotspots around the world. Modern armies should not be maintained for conquest or land and resource acquisition or on the pretense of self-defense. They should be secured as a worldwide police force that stops the slaughter of the innocent and helpless, restoring law and order to places that have forgotten what peaceful coexistence means. I dont mind that doing the right thing is expensive. I dont mind if going against orders is what it takes. I applaud the spirit of decent people who act when they see what everyone knows is wrong. I support our countrys efforts to secure a life for others that we ourselves are privileged to enjoy. Was this review helpful? His character makes one mistake - caring, when an ice-cold approach would be more suitable for such rescue operations. He must choose between following orders, and saving the lives of refugees he is ordered to leave behind (in the face of a brutal political regime of ethnic cleansing). A thought-provoking story. Long live Bruce Willis. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 2/17/2004A review of Tears of the Sun by Lewis308 This movie is not as good as most people are saying. The final scene in which noone but bad guys get hit and the "good guys" are right out in the open. Faky, not even close to being realistic, as for all those who say it is, I'd prefer the opinion of a combat vet. It was a okay action movie though. Was this review helpful? I felt like it made a very well needed patriotic statement about the good that can come from U.S. military intervention. The timing for it's release couldn't have been more perfect, right? However, I was dissapointed by the ";Hollywood typical"; aspects of it. The beautiful heroine falling out of her shirt, and the sexual tension between the two leads almost seemed to distract from the more important aspects of the movie. Overall.. I would recommend this movie to people who are torn by our current situation in the middle east, because I think that the storyline and the quote given at the end send a very powerful message. At the end of the film there was a quote which said it all: ";Evil prevails when good men do nothing!"; ...that includes me. Was this review helpful? And seeing as that the line for Old School was filled with loud and obnoxious brats, I opted for this. The premise was to be expected, but I actually found myself getting choked up and emotional. Good movie, but I did not leave the theater with happy thoughts. Maybe I'll go home and watch Bambi.. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 3/8/2003A review of Tears of the Sun by Naperion I am a Nigerian first of all and I would say that I was not particularly offended with the fact that the movie was set in Nigeria. A lot of people are trying to make it appear as if all Nigerians are collectively condemning the movie alleging that it is offensive but such people would be either ignorant about the realities of Nigeria's politics or else sadly indulged in escapist idealism. The fact of the matter is that the movie was as realistic as possible. Infact, the setup of the movie is amazingly reminiscent of the various political and ethnic instability that rocks the country and the scenario that ultimately plays out is not far-fetched. Actually, anybody who knows about the Nigerian civil war would find that this movie has a lot of points for credibility. As a matter of fact, this movie could very well become reality with the situation of things in Nigeria. Bruce was great. His decision to risk his life and that of his men for a few locals who were being slaughtered en masse in a bloody genocide, by going against his orders may strike one as rash but it is ultimately heroic. The movie was very gruesome and it is definitely not for the fainthearted. It captures uniquely the plight of most war-torn African countries. ";Tears of the sun"; is very moving and wonderfully made. The scenery was very real and the action was spellbinding. I would recommend this movie to anyone at any time, but make sure you keep your handkerchiefs nearby just in case those tears begin to flow freely. Was this review helpful? It shows us what it is really like on the other side of the world. Also, there is other things other than the American way of life with the movie.... Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
