The movie was a political statement on the appropriate use of military strength. The main character made a consciencious choice to risk his carreer and the men he cared about to use all the training and resources at his disposal in order to oppose an obvious evil. I often hear folks say, Oh, those people have been doing that stuff to each other for centuries. Well, I say, Centuries are long enough for any peoples to suffer. If they havent stopped tormenting each other by now, the time is overdue for the rest of the world to step in and put a stop to it! The graphic, shocking scenes of torture in the movie are nothing in comparison to the hideous realities taking place today in numerous hotspots around the world. Modern armies should not be maintained for conquest or land and resource acquisition or on the pretense of self-defense. They should be secured as a worldwide police force that stops the slaughter of the innocent and helpless, restoring law and order to places that have forgotten what peaceful coexistence means. I dont mind that doing the right thing is expensive. I dont mind if going against orders is what it takes. I applaud the spirit of decent people who act when they see what everyone knows is wrong. I support our countrys efforts to secure a life for others that we ourselves are privileged to enjoy. Was this review helpful? His character makes one mistake - caring, when an ice-cold approach would be more suitable for such rescue operations. He must choose between following orders, and saving the lives of refugees he is ordered to leave behind (in the face of a brutal political regime of ethnic cleansing). A thought-provoking story. The final scene in which noone but bad guys get hit and the "good guys" are right out in the open. Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful me parecio buenaPosted: 3/18/2003A review of Tears of the Sun by Anonymous mire la movie y me parecio buena pero pense que iva a estar mas accion mas bombas etc la iluminacion en la pelicula no me gusto mucho ya que esta muy obscura y dificilmente se podia mirar ok es una pelicula en la selva de noche pero creo que exageraron en poner el suspenso de noche ya que los momentes mas emocionantes ocurrieron de nochepero [pase un buen rato mirando la movie y espero que sigan haciendo movies como estas y no churros como otras o y otra monica bellucci como siempre hermosa y muy buena actuacion bruce willis tambien solo que en el transcurso la regaron por que quicieron poner romance y pues en la vida real y entre tiroteos el romance es el ultimo....... This film was a fictional portrayal of actual events and situations regarding 'ethnic cleansing' in the graphic nature not normally exposed in real-life media representations. I can admit that the storyline was a little drawn out. There may have been a little too much drama throughout the story. The action sequences were excellent. The actors portraying the SEALs were very accurate in attitude and overall performance. The story setting rivals realistic situations from the past, present, and possible future. Just when you think that they were about to be discovered by the rebels, they go away. I liked the scene where this time the american soldiers actually started killing the rebels in a village. I didn't like the graphic killings, of course, but the American soldiers actually saw the Nigerians? as a people and no longer as things. I haven't really seen a preview for this movie, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but after seeing this, I couldn't help wondering if things like this were still going on in the world...(ex. ethnic cleansing..)I felt that movies like this always make the Americans look good. Well, I guess it's hollywood, so it is setting that purpose. But sometime's isn't there something more worthwhile than always being the ";American"; hero in war movies? Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 2 users found this helpful a stunning heart of darkness journeyPosted: 3/8/2003A review of Tears of the Sun by shirlgirlindc this is an awesome, complex and stunning movie.....a tour de force not expected of willis........a heart of darkness journey of exploration and redemption for all involved. filmed with gritty reality, dark meanings and deep feeling, the story takes you from just another tale of a crack military rescue to a moving, heartthrobbing crisis of conscience....with an ending that will have you so riveted, sweatsoaked and exhausted of emotion. do not expect the expected here. this is a trip into both the physical beauty of the moment in Africa, a struggle of a people's flight through the jungles and mountains, and the horrible crisis of a country torn apart yet embracing the human spirit. all the characters make this story work, and there is no one star to this flick ......there are too many levels here.
