Trying to think about what really happened in the movie gets me all the more confused .Frankly , i don't really understand what the film is all about , so maybe a sequel would answer the relationships between the actors and their motives . I think those who believe in psychic stuff will find it meaningful!!

Was this review helpful? Her performance brought back memories of Under the Sand, another great vehicle. This could have been an extraordinary movie, but the ending was not only puzzling, but irritating. After it was finished, I realized I was wrong. It wasn't just a slow-starter, but a giant cliche'. In the age of films like "The Sixth Sense, "Fight Club", and "Identity" this movie feels like it's trying way too hard to emmulate that type of story line. It's bad enough that the plot goes nowhere. But that it tries to make up for it with a plot twist that's been done to death is laughable.

I actually apologized to my friends for suggesting to see it. Was this review helpful? But after wanning through the first 30 minutes, most people will lose interest.

Sarah Morton is a dreary English author tired of writing her mystery novels. So she takes a trip to France to stay at her publishers home were she meets his beautiful but promiscuous daughter Julie. She can't help but to be intrigued by Julie's lifestyle. Yet something dosen't sit right with Sarah about her new house guest.

The relationship between Julie and Sarah ends up being to only real story to this movie. The fun loving and bright French girl's effect on the stuck-in-her-ways English author might be the great metamorphose I have seen in any film this year. But their are always motives behind the actions.

Their are to many unexplained but implied relations behind the actions we see in the film. Perhaps this adds to the drug like mesmerizing feel of the film, or just leaves us asking what things did we need to see, and what did we not. Either way, stay for the ending. But I want to discuss the movie with other viewers and I can't find anyone to discuss the movie with. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 9/4/2003A review of Swimming Pool by moviedodger0 Yes, I did indeed fall asleep watching this trill-less, un-involving movie. Too slow, too many questions. Did she only imagine this as she wrote her mystery novel? Was there really a murder? Was the old gardener any good in bed? Who cares? The only thing worth staying awake for in this film is the full frontal nudity (oh, now you want to see it?). Oh yeah, a few more questions - why did she take a room with a view of the swimming pool if she didn't like swimming pools? Which daughter was real? The lovely naked one or the slightly stocky plain one with braces? And what the hell was Charlotte Rampling eating? Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 9/4/2003A review of Swimming Pool by bandjock0 I saw this movie while I was in France. I knew french films were a little different, but this was just awful; a complete waste of time. The movie is clasified as a horror, yet it's not scary, just confusing. I would recommend not to see this movie. Was this review helpful? Watching from the trailer I fugured it would be more of a thriller, mystery movie. It wasn't at all. It was a soft porn. The sexuale content of this movie was very invasive. Watching a movie of this kind in your own home would have brought more of a plot. Watching in a theater with a crowd of people was dis-tastefull. Not what anyone would expect. The whole movie is slow but the ending tries to throw in a twist but in actuale reality it just leaves you hanging. Not a suitable ending for a weak film. Was this review helpful? It's the last two minutes that throw you, and that keep you discussing it and thinking about it for days after. Up until then, things appear rather straightforward, although the character studies become increasingly more complicated. Charlotte Rampling as Sarah, an uptight and upright Brit author of popular mystery novels, is seen in drab colors and in a drab life. Offered the use of her editor's house in France, she surprisingly accepts. Upon her arrival, the house resembles the woman as she appears herself: colorless and spare. As she begins to absorb the sun, drink in the air, to let the gentle breezes stir her soul, the surroundings begin to reflect light and take on color and warmth. When Julie, the charming, licentiously seductive daughter of Sarah's publisher, shows up at the house and begins to inhabit every inch of it with abandon and sensuous enjoyment, Sarah's reactions become more vivid, and the colors deepen into richer tones. The swimming pool, closed and leaf-filled on Sarah's arrival, is opened, and becomes the representational focal point of the two women's interaction. Ultimately, Sarah experiences a rebirth - the rediscovery of herself as a younger woman who was not afraid to live and to enjoy life. She regains confidence in herself and her talents, and is able to break free of restraints she has imposed on herself through the years. Is the movie a straight mystery? Or is it a play within a play - merely the enactment of Sarah's new story inspired by the luxurious countryside? Rarely have I seen a movie that occasioned as much analysis among me and my friends as did SWIMMING POOL. Everyone has had a slightly different interpretation - everyone noticed something different. The movie is rife with symbolism and red herrings, and surprising (tho'dark) humor. Puzzling, but not a waste of time. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
