I can't describe how the dark comic sense of humor blends in with blood so well, not to mention, Mrs. Lovett's pies! Sweeney Todd is the story of innocent man, who is taken away, his wife raped, (she posions herself) and their baby girl, who is unamed until a sailor, Anthony, who rescues Todd at the begining of the movie, hears her sing. Her name is Johanna, and Anthony gets the accuarcy, from Johanna's own mother, Lucy. 15 years later, this happens, and Johanna, as beautiful and just as innocent as her father, Benjamin Barker, the film leaps into a thrilling cinematic experience. While, it is a musical, it is also a reminder for how we have sympathy for the murderer, but who can blame him?
As loosing a family member myself, i can only say that i would to the same, even though i'm a girl, just saying. Sweeney Todd, should have been nomiated for Best Picture, for the oscars, but at least it won the best picture for golden globe. For those who hate this movie, you are either unemoitional or disturbed... but better yet-
Sweeney Todd is my favoritest movie ever besides the dark knight and jaws. All highly accalimed of films, (universal, actually) but sweeney, and Depp's voice, Boham-carters performace, the story itself sets its course to a deadly, but sad end.
"There was a barber and his wife...." Tilts his neck, and the young Tobey slits his throat with HIS razor blade, nonehteless, not for the squeamish, but as a teenager i loved it. I am not really into musicals but this movie was just brilliant. The fact that the cast weren't really professional singers made the movie more real to me. Johnny Depp's voice mirrored the suffering and inner conflicts of his character in such a beautiful way. Tim Durton is indeed a unique director with a very creative vision. Was this review helpful? I love both Depp and Carter and i'm glad to say that neither disappointed! Singing was wonderful! I was slightly shocked at Depp's voice on this. Not quite what I expected, but not in a bad way. He was perfect for the part. The ending could have had a happier ending. Surprisingly too much gore. Music was good, Joanna rescue could have had a more interesting and meaningful story part, ending was predictable, can't say I'd keep it with my favorite musical dvds. Oddly different, but Johnny Dep expected.

He has a magnificent mind to visualize and make such a tremendous film. Mr. Johnny Depp and Mrs. Helena Bonham Carter work stupendous together. They know how to work off one another. I read that Mrs. Carter was pregnet during the filming and how Johnny would help her out if she forgot her lines or even what Tim Burton had told her. I hope to see ALL three: Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and Helena Bonham Carter working in more temerarious films together, because they know how to use what they have been given (talent). It was like watching the Texas Chain Saw Masacre as a musical. I really couldn't stomach watching it again. I cringed everytime his razorblade went up and the sound effects, tons of blood and the crunch of the skulls as they hit the pavement didn't help. I know this is Tim Burton's signature, but come on, enough is enough, it could have been done more tastefully so we could have enjoyed the movie. Was this review helpful? I already have the CD & play it all the time - what a beautiful voice. Every Star in the movie did his or her part seamlessly. l was totally absorbed & I will definately buy the movie when it come out. Thanks to Tim Burton for giving the world this play as a movie & especially having Johnny Depp as Sweeny - seems that in watching him, there could have been no other choice. Tim Burton immediatly sets the tone of the movie with the music in the begining scene, as well as the bloody rain falling staining everything it hits. The movie flows well, and the plot is simple and to the point. If ya like Tim Burton's stuff you'll love this, he doesn't let you down. And Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman all give awesome preformances. What really stunned me was how Sweeney Todd killed with ease, not batting an eyelash, as if it was an everyday thing easy as you please. You definitly feel his, you all should die including me, attitude throughout the movie especially since he even sings it. I saw the ending coming a mile away. You'd have to be really not paying attention not to see it, and it fit. Overall, I can't wait to see it again when the DVD comes out!

His versatility never fails to astonish me. Teamed with Helena Bonham Carter (our favourite British actress) and Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall et al, he once again excels in another 'quirky' role. Our only compalint was the blood spilling, when I had to constantly close my eyes. Otherwise, we really enjoyed this very different film. Not being Sondheim fans we were not aware of the cutting of some of the songs, but we certainly enjoyed the movie for its entertainment value.
After some of the recent disasters we have paid good money to detest, this came as a welcome relief - and No, we are not fans of the horror genre. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
