There was plenty of humour given from Ben Afleck and the rest of the cast. It really gets you in the holiday spirit. Definitely a must see. Rent or buy. Was this review helpful? It never explained how affleck aquired all this money... wish they had. I would recommend it for rental or even to buy on DVD, but wouldn't have paid money to see on the big screen. It was even more disappointing because of the cast of supposedly proficient ACTORS. Still everyone apart from Affleck turned in creditable performance, especially Applegate (though typcast)& O'Hara.
Affleck was the weak link, with a strident, insincere act. Within minutes my face hurt from all his unnecessary smiling (aparently his teeth are his best asset). He was not all to blame though.
The director & writer are also at fault for an inprobable story line and a dearth of depth that made it hard to understand the character's motivations or to like him.

This movie was really funny. The entire movie theatre was laughing throughout the movie. This would be a great choice for a date. I would give it 3 and a half stars if that was an option! Afleck reminded me alot of the old Dick Van Dyke Show and Catherine O'Hara as usual did not disappoint. Gandoldini also has a rare sense of comical timing for a "Wise Guys" image. Having said and thought that, I was set up to have no disappointments. Well, between the quasi-racial jokes, the middle-aged woman having "photos" and watching something with Christina Applegate, well, I loved it. I thought that it was damn witty and that the story line was a breathe of fresh air. Also, in general, I don't enjoy watching Ben Affleck on the screen because something about it is usually painful, but I thought that, if nothing else, his comedic timing is actually starting to get good and he's finally made a good impression on me. All in all, I'd tell people that I both liked and disliked to go see Surviving Christmas.
Oh, and yeah, it'f fifty times better than Prancer!! Was this review helpful? Hoping for a heart warming start to our holiday movie line-up. This movie totally #$%&ed the warmth out of Christmas! The "humor" was disgustingly crude. This is deffinately not a family movie. I sat through the language, porn, disrespect, references to incest, and visual S&M. All this to get to a hap hazard, thrown in reason that there is no "real" family. I feel that people generally go to a holiday movie to get away from dysfunction and crudity in the real world. How sad it is that you had to take a good idea and trash it. Was this review helpful? I think a lot of the bad reviews given are still from people that cannot get over the "bennifer" saga, and rate movies with Affleck in them lower, simply for the fact that he is in this movie..
