You will walk out feeling good but not totally blown away.
See it.

While the visual effects and the acting were well done, this whole film felt like a carbon copy of the first. The number of lines and scenes that were directly taken from the first film and used in this film borders on plagiarism. Kevin Spaceys talent is wasted on a plot that is just a regurgitation of the original, and there is no real adversarial relationship between his Lex and Rouths Superman. Routh does an admirable job as Superman, but spends most of the film saying the exact same lines that Christopher Reeve did in the first film. This film comes off as a two and a half hour screen test for Routh. Kate Bosworth did a good job as well, but is saddled with everyone else in a copied plot with no real twists and turns. I find it hard to believe that with all the money and all the writers involved, the best that they could come up with is a remake. It almost seems that the makers of this film were so afraid of offending anyone (especially the fans) that they went down the safest route possible - remaking the original. The only added plot device (pretty much the only spoiler) involves Lois child (as if you could not guess what that is). Plus, Superman was strangely out of character. He went from a staunch defender of justice to a deadbeat dad and a peeping tom who apparently (according to this lame plot) could not find the time to testify against Lex Luthor which allowed him to go free. If this was the best that the producers could come up with, they would have been better off re-releasing the original 1978 Superman film remastered and with extended footage (as a special edition) just like George Lucas did with the Star Wars films a few years ago. Given the time and money that this studio had to make this kind of a film, is it any wonder why more and more people are staying home and not paying to see these kinds of movies in theaters? I saw it today and was moved from the nostalgic opening credits to the very end. Brandon Routh carries the passed torch from Christopher Reeve with style and grace. No one can replace CR, but he is a close second. I agree with some that Kate Bosworth didnt really fit the bill, but the overall, I enjoyed the film very much. I know that there are viewers out there that will pick apart every nuance of the film, but those are the same ones that forward and reverse each DVD to look for errors. Go the the movies and enjoy the experience. I look forward to the sequal with more action and depth.
Spidey 3 looks awesome too!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 111 out of 145 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by dms65151 This movie contained every aspect of an excellent film. The story was great, the special effects and costumes made you forget it wasnt real, and the acting made you feel like it was real life and not a script. Brandon Routh was a wonderful choice to take the helm as a new Superman. Not only does he have similar features to Christopher Reeve, he also seemed to fall right into charachter and makes you believe he is indeed the man of steel. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. I think the issue is that todays moviegoers are more into bigger and better. They want more action with better special effects and more fighting and things blowing up. We seem to have fallen away from what makes a movie good. It has to encompass the same story and emotion as a 400 plus page novel in the span of two hours and many movies that try fall short of living up to giving you the same story. But in this new era of Superman Bryan Singer brought us the man of steel from a different aspect. We get to see him not only as the man of steel , but as a man who is vulnerable and struggling with his own issues of identity as we all do in our own lives. He stepped away from the campy style and took us to a serious world of superman where if you close your eyes for a moment during the movie you almost believe it is in fact reality. This is a heartfelt biography if you will of a moment of time in a mans life who we have all come to know as Superman. People need to rememember that in order to continue this story for us all to enjoy there must be fresh faces, and i think the entire cast did a great job of falling into place. Too many people have hung on to the old...its 2006 and we need to make way for the new. The movie was definately all that it was said to be and did not leave me dissapointed. I hope there will be more to come and i know it will again have us all looking to the sky as if we will see him flying by....as a good movie should. Was this review helpful? The star of the Richard Donner Superman film was Christopher REEVE. The TV Man of Steel was George REEVES. The creators of Superman were Jerry SIEGEL and Joe SHUSTER.
Please?
And oh yeah -- the new movie is wonderful. Its a shame so many people posting here are so jaded they cant enjoy it.

To me this movie captures the now...remember Garth? Live in the now Man If a person cant go to the theatre and be drawn out of the real world yet still be able to relate, whats the point...And while some are dissapointed with the idea of the super child...Boo Hoo! Let him be super but not a bit human? way to go guys this one is right on the mark!! Was this review helpful? THE TENTION BETWEEN SUPERMAN AND LOIS WAS SO HEART WRENCHING, THAT I COULD FEEL IT MYSELF. SO MANY SURPRISES TOO. YOU DIDNT SEE THEM COMING!!! I ONLY WISHED BRANDON GOT TO PLAY CLARK MORE. THE STORY WAS INTENSE. SUCH A GREAT JOB WAS DONE BY ALL. I HOPE THAT PEOPLE GIVE IT A CHANCE AND THEN DECIDE. I KNOW THEY WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED. AND TO BRANDON....YOU MADE ME FEEL LIKE I COULD FLY. Was this review helpful? Sign In 42 out of 59 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by JohnLP I was able to see this movie yesterday, and I have to admidt it was worth the wait! I have been following the making of this film for over a year and a half, before anyone or any story was selected.
I have reviewed some of the comments from other viewers and I dont think they were watching the same movie. Everyone knows and accepts the fact that no one can be Christopher Reeve, and it was not the intent to recreate or resurect Christopher Reeve in this film.
Think about it, a new face with similar facial, body definition was needed to keep the spirit of the previous films iintact, and Brandon Routh filled the bill. Not to mention a new suit design was created as a change in the apperance of Superman, as well as Clark Kent. We are in a new era, use some common sense.
It was refreshing to see a new look and a more serious story line than we have seen in previous movies. I personally feel Bryan Singer and the writers were right on time and in line, with this production. I am already anticipating an even better sequal.
Folks, we have a new Superman. Brandon Routh and cast have provided a great performance and I am sure we will not be dissapointed in future endeavors.
As far as the low visitation in the theatres, wait until the weekend is over. 5 Stars All The Way!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 25 out of 30 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by GlowingHaddock Saw it in IMAX format with 4 sequences presented in 3D. While cool, the instructions to put on 3D glasses and remove them intermittently throughout the film proved to be a distraction when I was otherwise completely engrossed in the movie. I recommend NOT seeing the 3D version.
In any case, I was deeply moved by the film. Supermans sense of isolation is profound and no other Superman film described this aspect so well. Many consider him not compelling because he is virtually invulnerable (unlike Spiderman, Batman etc.) but this film truly humanizes him.
And conversely it deifies him. The spiritual nature of the film is wonderful.
The film effectively illustrates Supermans solitary position and makes him more sympathetic than ever before.
Since I go to the movies to be moved, not just wowed by spectacular effects, Superman Returns is easily one of the best movies of the year. Was this review helpful? Sign In 27 out of 67 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by battleguard0 As a loyal fan of Superman for over 35 years now I can honestly say I know something of the hero. I have watched the various flavors in both comics, serials, TV shows, and movies. My tastes usually run with the normal crowd - popular shows and all, so dont think that I am just a flake.
Went during primetime on opening night and the theater was not packed. For a 200 million dollar movie this was not a good sign. Beyond the media flap about this movie, I always hold my thoughts in reserve until I see it.
For a budget of 50 million I could have made a better movie. Premium crap is what I paid for and premium crap is what I got. Out of a family of 4 seeing it we all thought it could have been better. Not a good sign for the summer guys.
Think of this - Batman Begins is considered the saving grace to the Batman franchise. Even the new head of Marvel Movies section is returning their stock movies back to the basic ideas of the comics. Comics got them there, kept them coming back for more, and matured as generations grew up with them.
Superman is not campy..never was inteded to be.
IF Hollywood wants to go back to making movies then I have a word of wisdom to them. Get rid of the directors who cant entertain anymore. Its not about the message, the special effects, or gore. Its about the story, the acting, and the entertainment value you bring. Its not fun spending 50 dollars to take your family out to a bad movie.
Time to get real and stop wasting our time and money.
Spending less for movies in DC. Was this review helpful? Sign In 25 out of 38 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by Nyjack3 i saw the movie last night and i have to say its awesome. one of the best movies of the year. everyone knows the superman story so there was no need to redo it.
this story delves deep into the man that is super and really makes him more human than the others. We have a man thats torn between what he wants and what others need from him. Although the movie is deep there are plenty of comedy and high action sequences to keep the simple minded entertained
i watched the movie at 2230 and the theather was packed. although it was late the crowd was fully interactive until the last seen. That folks should tell you all you need to know.
I HOPE THIS IS THE FIRST IN A LONG LINE OF SUPERMANS TO COME Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by Anonymous Superman Returns has a comparable character stylization of that found in the first two Superman movies. However the storyline follows a more human approach that may leave hard core Superman aficionados wanting for more. Bryan Singer had the monumental task of following up on an iconic movie series (a least the first two) and he did a wonderful job of balancing pure action with a functional storyline containing believable emotional undertones. I found myself on the edge of my seat during the plane crash scene and understanding to the emotions played out between Superman and Lois Lane. Brandon Routh played a convincing Superman who is very credible in the action sequences, yet I found his portrayal of Clark Kent as the loveable klutz lacking the humor and conviction of Christopher Reeves portrayal of the character. Kate Bosworths performance as Lois Lane was solid, but she seemed to lack the seasoned and edgy feel that Margot Kidder brought to the role. Kevin Spacey performance is dynamic and convincing as Lex, giving Lex a more sinisterly evil feel. Overall the film had a very smooth finished look and feel to it, although some may complain over the running time. This is a film worth the price of admission. Was this review helpful? I am a huge fan of all the Superman movies, and this did not disappoint.
Superman Returns is not a remake or a continuation of any of the past Superman Movies. Movie lovers must understand this. Besides Brandon Routh good looks, he acted the part excellent!!! I wait with eager anticipation for any Sequel........
However, I would have loved some closeness to proceed with Lois and Clarke.
Best for the Summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 20 out of 33 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by JPinna Having been a long time Superman - I was soooo glad to see him return to the big screen. I was eager to see Bryan Singers version and Im happy to say - I wasnt disappointed. Was it the best Superman movie? Did it re-define the character like last years Batman Begins. Sorry to say, but the answer is no.
I have to say, the best Superman movie is still Richard Donners 1978 Superman movie
Pros
- Brandon Routh is a good Superman.
- Kevin Spacey is a good Lex Luthor.
- I like the concept of Luthor stealing the crystals.
- The surprise at the end of the movie makes it all worth it.
- The airplane sequence is awesome as well as the overall flying effects are fantastic.
Cons
- The Clark Kent persona is lost in this movie
- Kate Bosworth is an okay Lois Lane
- Frank Langella is an okay Perry White. (And Perry - for the record Its Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN WAY!)
- You do NOT feel the chemistry between Superman and Lois.
- The Daily Planet did not seem like a news room.
-Where is the humor? The original Richard Donner movie was hysterical while being intense.
- Luthors scheme is too ridiculous.
- Too many lines from the original Richard Donner movie! Almost ruined the end!
All in all this is a good foundation for a series. Lets hope like the X-Men series the second installment will move the series forward. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 6/29/2006A review of Superman Returns by jochwa Look, its not a bad picture at all. But, some elements did not work. Brandon Routh looked a bit too young and was trying too hard to fit-in to the roll, but his perfomance was OK. Lois Lane, played by Kate Bosworth did not work at all. She was too small, too dimunitive, too young, and just not mature enough to play the part a pulitzer winning hard nosed reporter, but she appeared to be trying her best. Mr. Singer should have tried harder to cast people more suited to these rolls rather than to go for the youth crowd.
I do believe it was totally absurd to give Lois Lane a child and maybe have it be Supermans. Again the age and immaturity of Bosworth, only hinders the story more. Yes, this story is fantasy, but this made it more unbelivable to the fans of Superman. The boy is 5 and Supes and Lois look like a couple of freshmen in college, did she have relations when she worked on her High School Paper? It just does not work. Kinda like Jolie playing Farrels mom in Alexander.
The story takes a awhile to work up to a crescedo and then ends all too quickly. Spaceys Lex is over the top and I alomost got the impression I was seeing a really good Gene Hackman impression. Spacey and Langella add a real touch of class to this film, and I enjoyed most of the scenes they were in. The rest of the cast worked well to make up for the the mis-casting of the two central roles
I would really like to say I liked this film more, but there was too much CGI, too much soul searching, and not enough superMAN... And what little SuperMAN we got eventually just came off looking like a talented kid playing superBOY. Although I can only give this film two stars I would still recommend it. Just dont go in there expecting some grand adventure film, and if you are a rabid Supes comic book fan, please temporarily suspend what you know before you enter the theater. Overall, for 2.5 hours of cinematic comic book hero fun, its worth the matinee price, but not the evening price. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
