The essence of the original characters are there, even though they do not totally look like TOS characters, except of course, in the case of Spock. 100% on that one, totally believable as the young Spock.
Action packed, fun, and the special effects were great! It's a whole new Trek!!
(Paraphrased) As my farewell salutation would seem oddly self serving, I will say this, GOOD LUCK! Gene Roddenberry would be proud!
I truely look forward to the continuing voyages of the Star Ship - Enterprise. Beam me up Scotty!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Anyone could enjoy this movie. Trekkies should fear not to travel through the unsure, unknown, and beyond territory where no director has taken Star Trek before.
How could it have been better? Only by being longer. Five stars. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 8/9/2009A review of Star Trek by Narnia_freek_alecz For the younger generation, 13-19, it is a great introduction into the Star Trek world.
For the older generation, 20's on up, it make us all fall in love - as illogical as that may be - with our favorite character all over again.
Action...Comedy...Love...Sorrow...What every Star Trek film is made of.

Captain Richard Robau of the U.S.S. Kelvin is summoned to combat the Narada, a massive Romulan vessel causing electrical storms and a rift in time amidst a Black Hole obliterating everything in it's path. Watching the destruction, Robau is surreptitiously summoned to the presence of the renegade Commander Nero under the guise of negotiating a cease fire. But Robau's good faith is betrayed when under interrogation, Nero becomes impatient and murders him leaving the Kelvin in the hands of First Officer George Kirk now faced with trying to save the Command Crew while his own wife lies in Sick Bay about to give birth to their first Son. As Kelvin's Crew evacuates, Kirk draws Romulan fire with the aim of sacrificing the ship in a collision and christening his son James as a last communique. Growing up as a rebellious entity, James T. Kirk is councilled after a barroom brawl by Captain Christopher Pike who reminds him of his Dad's sacrifice in hope of recruiting him into Star Fleet Academy where he continues his unorthodox behavior beating a no-win simulation as programmed by a Vulcan Officer named Spock. When Uhura receives distress transmissions from Vulcan, Good Friend Leonard McCoy spirits Kirk onto Pike's Enterprise where Kirk sees the Narada's calling card and tries to warn Pike. But Pike falls prey to Nero's 'Olive Branch' ploy placing Spock in the Commander's chair where he effects an escape for the ship rescuing the Vulcan High Council and maroons Kirk at a Federation outpost as a punishment for what he perceives to be Mutiny. As all looks hopeless, an entity from the past steps in to guide Kirk and brilliant Engineer Montgomery Scott toward resolving the conflict and stopping Nero's onslaught.
Although the plot line deals with Federation past, the time line variance (now a common staple of the series) is not really clear until about midway through using Nimoy to tie up the loose ends. This would seem to... Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Never was a Star Trek fan....That being said I thought the movie was great..and very well casted. I don't understand why anyone would want to expect the same thing from the movie that came out of the series, thats boring. Very glad I went to see the movie and hope there is a sequel. Great escape from reality. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/27/2009A review of Star Trek by Catre-vant-treze I dreaded this film when it was announced because I'd assumed it would make a travesty of the series - since the remaing producers of ST seem to despise sci-fi in general. But aside from one flaw it was a surprise in terms of both casting and action, and the story, though pretty much episodic rather than epic, was actually not too shabby.
The new actors were matched to the original characters about as closely as could have been done (though someone fell flat on his face designing Chekov's hair...?!?) More than a few of the action sequences in this film were truly edge-of-your-seat material, particularly the huge spider monster on that ice world. But we could've done without that painful "OOOHHHBAAAAAHHHMAAAAAAHHH..." choir thing mixed into the swelling orchestral score just as Scot ejects the core and the Enterprise breaks free of the black hole's grip. Can't we escape the sewer of politics *anywhere*? Am I missing some heavy symbolism here - like what, specifically, is that retro-fascist breaking us free from? The heavy burden of freedom, I suppose. *sigh* I expect some tech-savvy fanboy editors will fix that junk with a good audio cut & paste in a web-based alternative once this gets out of the theaters. As it is now, the sound for that scene is virtually retchworthy.
The only other criticism I'd make is that the production design on the Enterprise itself, particularly the bridge, which was a little heavy on the shiny "beauty salon" look, and both far too slick and too technologically advanced to have come before the bridge seen in the original series. They couldn't have gone with that primitive original look, obviously, but they would have done better to tone it down a little so it could *plausibly* have been a bridge that predates the original series.
All told though, a worthwhile addition to the ST film catalog and an admirable job by the cast and director of pulling off a convincing backstory for the original characters' careers. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Somebody in Paramount has got some reall brains!! This is the most classic way to resurrect interest in a Sci-Fi Classic. I call it the Spielberg Syndrome. I was not only fascinated by the genere pre-history but the special effects and just plain fantastic scenes were way above the norm. The characters while very classic, provide the continuing glue, that puts this spectacular film altogether. I was literally totally mesmerized by the whole production. KUDOS!! to Paramount Studios, again!! NJMJr Was this review helpful? It emmulated Star Wars 1-3 in a way as you see Jim Kirk grow up and into a responsible Captain and Anikan grow up into Darth Vader. The likeness of the characters were great as well. The action was great and even tho' you knew the stars were not going to die, it was still very suspenseful and thrilling. That's all I'll say. It was worth every penny to see Star Trek in the movies. Big screen always helps as well b/c of the wonderful action sceens. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful This movie was worth every Imax cent. A new generation of fans are sure to be born and more movies will come and that is a good thing. So go and go boldly to support this movie you won't be disappointed! Was this review helpful?
