Star 80 showcases Fosse’s hyperactive choreography. Tragic lives set to dance rhythms. Although no explicit dancing is employed, the characters speed through life in a dance to the death. The rhythms of the film are dance rhythms. Most people probably find this movie so disturbing because classic tragedy is seldom seen in modern terms. Shakespeare’s tragedies are “high art”, and barely touch us today. But by making the Snider character both repulsive, yet by some bizarre chemistry almost sympathetic, the movie draws one into the final and inevitable tragic conclusion. Even without the flash-forwards, the horrible end is foreordained early in the story.I think this movie is an honest snapshot of a psychopathology that infects a few to a tragic extent, and many to a lesser extent. If you don’t want to see the seamy underside of humanity, avoid this film. If you want some genuine insights into this seamy underside, I think “Star 80” can deliver that and great entertainment too.
