A common coach of the Overland Stage Lines becomes the gathering place for seven souls of the old west trying to find their destiny in a little town called Lordsberg. A pregnant wife searching for her husband's military outpost, a card sharpe disenchanted with his lot and feeling the passage of life, an annebriated ne'er-do-well physician who pairs off with a drummer of distillery, a bank president who decides to take the easy way out, a town trollup who is tired of being an outcast and an escaped convict falsely accused and seeking justice. Fate literally throws these souls together on the long road to the future forcing each to walk in the other's trail and maybe helping all to fit that last difficult piece of reason into the scrambled puzzle of life to try and make a morsel of sense. This is a fine ensemble piece featuring the best players that Ford could assemble and using Wayne as not so much of a star but more of a catalyst to the mix of great characterizations. In many ways, it's just another western but this is really Ford's show as he allows us to catch a glimpse of some not-all-that-perfect life situations. Yakima Canutt, the reknowned stunt man, performs the 'horse-team scramble' which many have copied since. A Classic. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-1 of 1 Per Page | ||
