It usually takes a lot for a movie to be added to my all-time favorites, but Something New easily made the grade. Most so-called romantic comedies are either too trite and sappy to be funny, or depend solely on simplistic slapstic humor for laughs, at the expense of true romance and character-plot development. Refreshingly, Something New manages to serve up a generous heaping of both romance and comedy in spades. Kudos to director Sanaa Hamri and a stellar cast for bringing a fresh perspective on interracial romance, a subject that is too often preached at the audience, rather than engaging them. Something New delivers its messages about love, acceptance and openness with subtle artistry - this movie makes you think, but youre thoroughly entertained in the process. I couldnt have picked a better cast for this movie. Sanaa Lathan (of whom Im a long-time fan) is a gem, perfoming her role with an understated intensity that captures the character of Kenya perfectly. Simon Baker (as Brian) is the perfect counterpoint to Sanaas subtly-acted character in this movie, managing to look thoroughly smitten but genuinely expressive and altogether real, unlike so many of the over-acted romantic male lead roles in film today. I did not know of Simon Baker before this film, but his excellent turn in Something New has made a new fan out of me! Sanaa and Simons love scenes steam up the screen, but they have such great acting chemistry that theres no need for an overload of skin. Theres no gratuitous flesh-flashing here, which gives the film its PG-13 rating, while delivering more than enough sensuality and emotional intensity to satisfy grown up viewers. All-in-all, Something New is an uplifting movie, with a universal message- Sometimes a person that looks perfect on paper is not your soulmate, and love can strike where you least expect it. Whether happily committed or still looking for Mr. or Ms. Right, thats a message we can all relate to.

A must see movie for all. Times are changing fast but people are still so slow when it comes to change. I am a black woman who has mostly dated white males. Right now, the love of my lfe, is a wonderful, white, male. The movie showed how people react to something different, something new. A pretty good depiction of true reactions, misunderstandings, myths, etc. Everyone has a preference in who what they like. Now is the time to just accept someone elses preferences without judgement. The movie was very heartfelt. I will buy this one when it comes out on DVD.

The movie was absolutely wonderful. I was so happy with the ensembles performance, especially with Donald Faison. I always knew he was funny, but he reminded me so much of my younger brother it was scary. As a matter of fact, I think I need to contact the writers and producers of this film because they had to have known my entire family to pull this off! (smile) As a recently widowed, newly single girl (again, after 7 years), I have come to the realization that it is EXTREMELY slim...pickins out here for a girl with a couple of list requirements like Kenya. Plus, Im 6 feet, so the pickins dwindle from little to abso-freakin-lutely NOTHING!! I told my dad, who grew up during segregated times, that I may have to switch teams...Ive always been the minority, from private school on till now, so Im used to it. I am already the United Nations when it comes to friends, why not take it to the next level? As long as Im happy and can follow my heart (like Kenyas dad told her in the movie), everyone around me will just have to deal....if the guy is as fine as Simon Baker (and comes with the dog), thats an absolute BONUS. -)

I cant imagine this film getting bad reviews It was intellectually and emotionally satisfying. My husband and I watched it together and enjoyed it immensely. It was interesting to see a white man face the difficulties in crossing over cultural and racial lines. It was interesting to see the heroines conflict, as well. The characters were well-rounded and believable. Go see it and enjoy. Its worth the effort.

Excellent, excellent movie. Im not a big fan of romantic comedy because they tend to be too mushy and unrealistic. I found this movie to be very entertaining and refreshingly different. Loved Sanaa Lathan (beautiful and extremely talented actress) and Simon Baker is a real cutie (who knew!?) The love scenes were pure electricity. Cant wait til this ones out on DVD!!!!!!!!!!!

Something New is a refreshing and wonderful movie. Despite what some people may say, color is important, because it is a beautiful thing. However, its what you do and the way you act when you see color. This, I think, is what Kenya has had to learn. Yes, hes white, and a beautiful person too. This movie highlights many of the negative comments that African American women receive from their friends, family and community when they venture to date outside of their race. Yes, black people have their prejedices too. In the end, though, its mainly about how that person makes you feel, and this is what Kenya has had to realize.

Loved the movie. Its about time (although long overdue) to see a major film in years address the issue of interracial relationships. Just because a woman is black doesnt mean her ideal man has to be. Black American women are increasingly gaining education and are in middle-class level more than their black male counterpart, which is another issue. Just because shes black doesnt mean she has to settle for less just because her sub-culture says she must. Its an issue of compatibility in the end, not race. P.S. Simon Baker looks goooooood in this movie!

I absolutely loved the movie! I have dated out of my race, I dont see color, I see the person and what they have to offer to the relationship. The movie was right on about the differences between being black and white, but it shows that love can win overall. Simon Baker is absolutely hot! I think we should all go for what we want, not just settle because of what other people think. The movie was perfect!

Sanaa Lathan is a beautiful and wonderful actress. She is perfect for the role. It is great to see a beautiful Black Woman on the big screen opposite a handsome and talented Man, who happens to be White (Simon Baker). Im all for a good love story and enjoyed watching these two people who came from different walks of life and find something special in each other . They did not give into living their lives the way other people think they should. Im glad the writer and producer of the movie Something New, stepped away from the Hollywood sterotype of a Black Woman and showed her as someone that is beautiful, sexy and desired. More moves like this need to be written and produced and put on screen for all to see. BLACK WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SEXY TOO. ITS TIME WE ALL ADMIT THIS FACT!!!!!

I feel that this movie is stepping out of the norm and it showed real issues when dating outside of a race. It showed blacks, not only blacks but black women being successful and that is something that we normally do not see portrayed on the big screen often. I feel that the movie was put together very well and welcome many others like it. I feel like everyone did a great job in this movie.

This movie makes a sister want to go out and get a white man. I am married and have been for six years. As a business woman who is always busy I realized this movie was about my life. It was great to see that the movie openly addressed racial stereotypical thoughts about white and black people in date. The truth is if many black women, like myself would have seen this movie before marriage we probably would have considered marrying outside of our race. However just like the movie we would have had to deal with alot of racial issues and many of us were not ready for that. When all else fails go get a white man he will pamper you. Our black brothers dont hesitate to go and date a white woman especially black athletes whose mothers and aunts have scraped and scrambled for them to make it to the NBA and NFL. Great movie, would see it over and over again........................

I agree with some of the reviews that indicate that the story is predictable, but it was also refreshing to see a story told that includes us and how so many things prevent us from stepping out of our comfort zones. You can either go for yours and try and grab a little happiness or you can be miserable worrying about what they will say - whoever the they might be in your life. Notwithstanding the race issue, the movie has one central theme in my view and that is that we often miss out on our blessings simply because the present did not come the way we thought it would or should be wrapped.

I must admit that I had no intention on seeing this movie .... the only reason I decided to watch it was due to the pleasant feedback I was getting from others and also due to the fact that I absolutely love Sanaa Lathan. And I gotta say that Im really glad I decided to see it. It was a very well-put together movie that was done in good taste. I hope people dont get to caught up on the pros and cons of interacial dating. Because in the end people are going to date and marry whomever they choose and for whatever reason they want to marry that person. I really loved the music and I totally enjoyed the ending. This movie movie didnt cause me to change my thoughts and prefrences on whom I choose to date ... but, in the end it did warm my heart and lifted my spirits. Southernly Yours, Daphne ... Always A Southerngirrl !!

so youre saying that theres no way that a black woman could climb the rungs of the business ladder? BWACK? darling, listen. I go to university with many black women, not being one myself, I see when my girlfriends are studying their school work...bottom line you work hard, youll get somewhere...if you sound illiterate and just not hate on women or black women to be politically correct, youll get nowhere. This is why the womens movement happened! to further women into society so they could get recognized for the talent they had already possessed and were prevented from revealing based on the fact that they were women. so if youre implying that women are stupid and that it is much more likely that a man would be in Sanaas position...take a look at Oprah and Martha Stewart

I watched this movie last night and I was pleasantly surprised by it. I think the movie is simply about people letting go of their images of the perfect person and trying something new. I am a young educated black woman, and for me the movie showed how so many of us settle for less than we deserve just to be politically correct and to stick to the ideals of our families. I think love has no colour, we should not close ourselves off to love just because it comes from someone of a different race. I found Kenyas uptight attitude and anal ways to be more of an obstacle to the relationship then everything else. So many of us get caught up in career and school and everything else, forgetting that we need to live. Whats the point of getting an education and making alot of money if at the end of the day you are alone and miserable?
