Movies with no plot but only effects are not necessarily doomed like this one. Key example is Shoot 'Em Up which does not attempt to portray itself as a deep movie, but is fun to watch, so one comes away in awe. However, Smokin' Aces neither achieves that level of effects where the plot no longer matters, nor is it very fun to watch. It is not very funny either. Jeremy Piven, who has proven himself as a wonderful comedic actor is given NOTHING to work with. As a matter of fact, there is not a single legitimately funny scene in the movie (laughable perhaps, but not enjoyable). The worst part is that it is obvious that this movie wants to seem like so much more than it really is, and that makes it pathetic. Was this review helpful? I forced mysefl to the end, being bombarded by blood, torture, body fluid recipies and no holds barred garbage that puts Imus on a kindergarten level. How low we have sunk when a movie like this can garner raves. Probably one of , if not the worst films I have seen. I rate it one as I cannot do less. Was this review helpful? Suprised by the acting of Ryan Reynolds he has definitly came a long way since Van Wilder. Actually shows a sign of showing up to his acting classes. Some of the stuff that happens really is unbelievable, but what the hell there needs to be in movies like this. I liked this movie because its a definite break from movies like Babel...by that I mean very very bad bad movies. The Script is a three and the action is a five so I give it a Four Star. Plenty of action without the distraction of any depth of plot. A cliche of a hero sketched out in the last 5 minutes. An overly melodramatic ending that might be meaningful in the context of a different movie. For a good mindless action flick watch Crank instead. If you feel my review is way off, then I heartily recommend the classic drama Flinstones for your viewing pleasure. Was this review helpful? Bloodbath? Duh, all of the guns on the movie poster should have given that one away. Freakshow? You bet, right out of Mad max. And once you see it, you will wonder how the critic determined Alisha Keys character was a lesbian.
I dont care if it was like a movie from 20 years ago - 10 years ago, blah blah blah. Only professional movie critics care about those comparisons. If you like pulp fiction, kill bill, oceans eleven, etc., youll like this one. Was this review helpful? Well in crime and gangster movies the protagonist is usually the bad guy and bad guys ussually die when they are doing bad things. Were not sure if Affleck is really a bad guy but hes involved in something that is way out of his league and whether it happened where it happenned or at the hotel he was gonna bite it anyways. Also its prob the best role Affleck has had in years. I mean for an Oscar winner his biggest claim to fame since then was the J-lo fiasco so that should tell you something.
Now the movie is an action movie not an independant artsy movie so for everyone crying about Jeremy Piven being wasted, there is this. He plays a slimeball brilliantly and he has done so since the start of his carreer. Even on entourage he plays a snake manager who does anything to get his way. Remember in Very Bad Things he kills his brother how can that be twisted to make him look lovable? The rest of the cast is awesome in their own way. This is Ryan Reynolds best movie probably, because hes doesnt play the usual college jerkas he is prone to doing. (which is good in its own right but thats another review.
To close the action is great, the acting is on par and its makes for a fun time at the movies. Remember its an action movie and not only that its an action movie that isnt a sequel with a different cast starring Ice Cube. That alone makes it worth watching to anyone with a taste for good movies. Even if it does have Ben Affleck in it. Was this review helpful? For all you Good Will Hunting and Entourage seekers - look elsewhere! This aint that type of party. Read the reviews from the guys in my opening line and go see this ACTION movie.
Oh yeah, there are some other folks in this thing besides those alluded to above namely, Common, Alicia Keys, Taraji Henson (on that fine-ass peacemaker known as the .50 cal!!), Nestor Carbonell, and Joel Edgerton!! I really enjoyed myself and love the character maybe expect for Andy Garcia but he can really play those kinds of characters. Anyone who didnt like this movie should just stick to chick flicks, pablum puke about geese imprintation, and lame Steve Martin remakes.
This was pure action from start to finish in the genre of 3000 Miles to Graceland and True Romance.
I liked it better than Kill Bill Part 1 and equal to Kill Bill Part 2.

He managed to have himself killed early in the movie and attractive alternative to surviving this piece of thrash. How many times have I gone to see a movie that was geared for guys that want to see stuff blow up in real cool ways and feel like Im watching a soap opera? Look my GF didnt want to see it so I took her brother. We liked it and we moved on. There wasnt a long discussion about the movie afterwards. But I saw what I wanted to see and I was happy.
Im tired of you fake movie critis saying stuff like you know what your talking about. Your not a genius. You dont know something special. Most importantly your not cool.
