His whole way of being suggests mental disorders, regardless of the part played. Billed as a comedy, "Smile" was more of a drama. It's mid-70s clothes and hair were both amusing and repulsive. With an ensemble cast, it was hard to get involved in any one character. With dry dialogue and scenes that were either boring or bizarre, it was hard to believe I lived on the same planet as its producers. I'm sure it's faded into obscurity, but if you happen to see it on the shelf, it's better left alone. Was this review helpful? It was made in Santa Rosa, where I grew up, and many of the local faces of that era are in it, including my high school history teacher! Alot of the gals as contestants went to school with me as well. I also like Dern's brief mention of Chosin Resevoir, a Marine Battle from the Korean War, as my dad was in that battle. So, it is all Santa Rosa 1970's, a town that no longer exists, buried by development. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-2 of 2 Per Page | ||
