Oh, sure, there's a bitter professor and his insecure, studious daughter who hates the talented, attractive E.R. doctor that wears high-heels in the dead of a Buffalo, NY winter - but the movie would've been better titled Jaded People. Dennis Quaid's awesome acting and Ellen Page's delivery of smooth lines and close-ups on her perfect, little, snobby face (for the movie, folks!) made the film look 'smart'. Thomas Hayden Church and Sarah Jessica Parker were a constant relief because if I had to live in that cold, dreary, depressing city I would probably be bitter, too. Kudos to the set people for making it so believable and bravo for the script. Was the movie good? Yes. Would I see it again? Maybe on DVD. Do I think you should see it? Yes. It's a nice, little, 1.5 hour lesson in compassion and great reminder of why midwestern transplants (to the west coast) never move back 'home'. Was this review helpful? Ellen Page as the young republican and Thomas Hayden Church as the lovable screw-up (as played in Sideways) were the most enjoyable to watch. This film needed a few more Sideways type capers to bring it out of its "boo-hoo, my life's not perfect, whay, whay" mood.
It was a little dark and probably not for the standard blockbuster audience but they'll be watching the crude Forgetting Sarah Marshall anyway and only sneaking into this flick afterwards like I did. I can see what the people here are saying, especially about Sarah Jessica Parker. Her character was pretty annoying. The issues in academia are very near and dear to my heart, and thie film's portrayal was funny and satirical. This is what made the movie for me. Otherwise, would be boring. Was this review helpful? She can't act like anything other than her nasal-ly, whiny, sniffling self. This movie was just dumb. Enough of horsey face, already! Was this review helpful? Sign In 7 out of 9 users found this helpful Posted: 4/12/2008A review of Smart People by crackermule1 They didn't give me the option of zero stars, so it gets a one. I think they abbreviated the true title of this movie to fit it on the marquis: it should have been "Smart People...wouldn't waste their money and time to watch this." One, it was exceedingly boring with the exception of a few entertaining one-liners. Two, the characters were poorly developed, two dimensional, and unlikeable. Three, there was absolutely NO chemistry between Quaid's and Parker's characters to make a relationship believable. At one point, you heard police sirens in the background--I harbored the false hope that the cops were coming to deliver the plot...or maybe to rescue me from this movie. I've never seen Dennis Quaid look so bad, and the horrifying images resulting from the two gratuitous shots of Thomas Hadyn Church's butt are burned in my brain forever. My friends told me the movie was only 90 minutes long, it felt as though I'd sacrificed 5 hours of my life. Consider this your warning--if you still want to torture yourself with this movie, at least waste a little less money and wait until you can rent it. Was this review helpful?
