This is a movie as complex as Chinatown, as rough as a first cut. Which maybe it is. I, for one, would rather see this thought extruding, politically provoking, cynical slice of innocence before my option to vote, than a more sophiscated set of cuts and delivery after the moment when it could make a world transforming difference.

This is easily the worst movie I have seen this year. I felt completely misled by the previews, which featured this film as a witty political satire. What the movie ends up being is a poorly-edited meandering cinematic frustration which wastes the talents of several top-rate actors on a confused and condescending script. I struggled in vain to find ways to enjoy the movie, but could not. Over two hours later, I felt cheated of both time and money. I can not discourage the viewing of this film enough.

If you are a Chris Cooper fan, be advised that he plays a minor character (despite what the trailer shows). The main character is played by Danny Huston. It's an odd bit of casting since Huston seems to play the whole thing on one note. His unimaginative performance brings the whole film down. The script, however, has its virtues. As as typical with Sayles, the film is sympathetic to salt of the earth people. In fact, the film's theme seems to be that it has become very difficult to NOT sell out. You either get paid by THE MAN or you go hungry. Integrity is not appreciated and the powerful are decadent monsters. Also admirable is Sayles' thwarting of cliches. He has a gift for telling unique stories in an original way that never condescends to the characters or the audience. Daryl Hannah makes a strong impression in a role that reminded me of her performance in Kill Bill. She's not a villain, but she's very agressive in a sexy-scary sort of way. Maria Bello is also very strong as Huston's ex-girl friend. The rest of the "stars" (Richard Dreyfus, May Kay Place, Thora Birch, Tim Roth, Kris Kristopherson) have their moments, but are really just expanded cameos. Billy Zane should be singled out for giving the most annoying, arrogant, lazy, irritating, smirking, snearing performance as a cynical political consultant. Zane completely phoned in the performance and peppered it with stammering and grinning. Who does he think he is? James Dean? Cooper, of course, bears an uncanny resemblance to George W. Bush. Illiterate, daft, arrogant, spoiled, and clueless enough not to see he is the agent of evil. They don't name his party, but you know which party would support abuse (and murder) of immigrants, pander to religious bigots, and flatter straight white men and their white, white wives.
