Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful SidewaysThis is the worst movie that I have ever seen in my life. My previous worst movie was Rancho Deluxe made in the 1970s. It is the worst category of movie -- a comedy that is not funny. Additionally, the main characters were total dirtbags and I had zero sympathy for them. The movie theater was (amazingly)packed when we saw this, yet there was no laughter for the whole movie. At the end, when the main character was talking about suicide, I blurted out Please do it and end this awful movie. That was the only thing that caused laughter. Had we not been with friends we would have walked out. We didnt go to see another movie for three months. Was this review helpful? It is a type of artsy movie that, if you happen to like those sort of movies -- movies somewhat comparable to Lost in Translation, then you will LOVE this movie... and yearn to learn more about the art of wine.
Miles (played perfectly by Paul Giamatti, he deserved an oscar for this role) is a torn wine lover who is suffering from lonliness and the aftermath of his divorce, and is trying to make it as a novelist. His friend from college, Jack, is an eccentric and selfish actor, who is also struggling with success and is unsure of his love for his fiancee.
Some people go off the banter here about the immortality in this particular film -- and yes, the guys do act like jerks in this movie, but youre really missing the point of the movie here. Movies and films throughout history are full of immorality and what it means to learn from those lessons and to grow as human beings.
Sideways is a story about two best friends learning important life lessons, people moving on from past hurts, learning the values of trust, and what it means to love in relationships and friendships.
This film is also a great way to open the doors to the beauty of wine-tasting, be it the taste of pinot, or whatever your wine preference is -- even IF its merlot -- this is a fantastic movie with superior acting. Sideways is a deep movie, it is simply amazing -- and is not a movie for those who enjoy watching mindless films. Was this review helpful? I can't believe half of you think that you are more intelligent than the people in the business that say this movie is brilliant! The comments about this movie's more vulgar scenes are rediculous...it's rated R for a reason, and furthermore, just because something takes place in a movie doesn't mean that the writers condone or approve of that type of activity in any way- its just real life...sorry for those of you who avoid reality at all costs.
Anywho, The way the two male charachters contrasted so much, and still relied on eachother for a sort of social survival was very cool. The acting was simply superb. This movie has something to offer to everyone. The charachters have something universal about them; they have traits that everyone could relate to at one point or another. They were easy to understand and get into, but not anywhere near cheesy. I laughed my butt off, especially when they were wrecking the car...It was a REAL movie,and is deserving of everyhting it has recieved.
Oh, and for the reviewer who made a comment about how the people who "didn't get" the movie probably were mid-westerners...I am an Indiana guy, and loved it. No worries. I'm also 20 yrs old, proving if you are willing to simply open up to the movie, it is stellar. Was this review helpful? Shame I did not gt a chance to c this film while it was at the cinemas in NZ.

Sign In 2 out of 2 users found this helpful Best American Film of the YearTo those morons who found the movie "slow" or "boring" are probably boring people who can't recognize or identify with the witty realistic friendship between two adults as they grow older. The characters were classic and comedy subtle....making it all the more realistic. Perhaps the others would be better off at "Austin Powers" or "Too Fast too furious" crap type movies....little brains deserve simple entertainment....its no wonder they deserve the simple leader they seemed to have voted for as well....Sideways is perhaps the best film out of America, so far this year...nothing else comes close. Sign In 5 out of 9 users found this helpful The Narcissist and his EnablerI rented this moving expecting a lighthearted, fun movie about two friends travelling though the California wine country. What I got was a thoroughly unpleasant movie about a conscienceless narcissist and his depressive enabler. It is in no way amusing or entertaining. And it was most definately not, as one reviewer described it 'heartwarming'. I hope that that description was applied with deep irony. Ladies, if you want to see men behaving according to your worst nightmares, rent this move. In it you can see:
- a 40+ year old man try to get laid as many times as possible in the week before his wedding.
- see a man lie to his fiance
- see a man make promises of eternal love and devotion to a woman who he has known only a few days
- see the same man use the same woman's child to ingratiate himself with her
- see a 40+ year old man get drunk and confrontational (many times)
- see a 40+ year old man talk obessively about himself to a woman who, totally inexplicably, puts up with it and indeed supports him in his infantile self-preoccupation.
I could go on, but that is all the time I am going to waste on this truly appalling movie. Watch at your own risk. Was this review helpful? This movie deals with mature feelings, jokes, scenes, etc. I was sorry to see that this movie didn't win more awards as I feel it should have. However, even though I thought the movie was hystercial, there are adult scenes that are not for the young or people that are easily offended. I loved the actors and the script was absolute genius. It's as though you're on their trip with them! So, pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy! A must see! Was this review helpful? I am not into wine, cheating men who are going to get married or snob intellectual BS....but guess what? I LOVED IT....I found it funny, sad, enlighting and well worth it. THIS MOVIE DRAGGED, IT WAS SO BORING I WANTED TO LEAVE THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OF IT BUT GAVE IT THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT THINKING AND HOPING IT WOULD GET MORE INTERESTING (SINCE MY FIANCE WAS TICKED I HAD PICKED IT) BUT IT DIDNT.
