The ill-fitting results make for a heavily-stylized mess, but while its prospects in the domestic arena arent looking too sunny, the Lee Daniels Entertainment presentation, which held its world premiere at Toronto, will probably have an easier time locking in European distribution for an inevitably racier European version. Suffice it to say that while, in this lukewarm climate of pointless remakes and uninspired sequels theres always welcome room for a film that wants to push the envelope, Shadowboxer merely crams it with a lot of nonsense. A howler of a slab of pulp fiction. The eccentric casting alone plainly means to short-circuit various preconceptions about race, sex, age, and body type. But this monumentally ridiculous film doesnt stop at subverting stereotypes it discombobulates narrative logic and the basic laws of human behavior. Still, theres a certain pleasure to be derived from watching the actors attempt to dig out from under the rubble that William Lipzs screenplay repeatedly dumps on their heads. Its an exactly boring film!
