My mother-in-law, Rita Lucille Fancher Burns, was born and raised in the small village Alpena Pass a short distance from Harrison Arkansas. She talked about this horrible event form the first time I became a member of the family in the early 1950's. The Morman Church recognized their involvement by building a monument located at the Courthouse in Harrison, Arkansas, that offers an apology etched in granite. The movie correctly portrays the event, there might have been some liberty taken in the story line of the love story, the rest is factual. Was this review helpful? I went online and studied all about this mascare about Eurfolks killing other Eurfolks. I am surprised that no one listens to A&E about the Mormons and one of them just got executed in Ohio.
American Justice and A&E showed two actual shows about Mormons killing other members to keep them from revealing the truth about The Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price and Doctrines and Coveants.
Everyone who has ever studied the cults knows LDS are just one of three. The other two are Christian Scientists and Jehovah Witnesses.
This is a tragic part of our history when Eurfolks turn against Eurfolks. Little wonder the Mormons got ran out of New York, Illinois, Missouri, and so forth.
There is no other Testament of Jesus Christ but The Holy Bible.
The Mormons have a bloody history behind them. They need to do a Mea Cupa and ask forgiveness for what they did to the settlers in 18 century.
This movie is not about Hate it is about the truth. Open up your encyclopedia. Was this review helpful? Have been reading as much of the actual accounts of the event since, however, and can only conclude that, while some may be offended by what they perceive as Was this review helpful? This despicable movie only promotes the very forms of religious bigotry and intolerance it pretends to expose. No doubt it will sway the ignorant into believing “it really happened this way” despite much research and efforts to present this story correctly.
And if anyone is really interested in the plight of the Indians, I suggest you look up an event known as the “Bear River massacre” which happened about this time. Here, an army of California volunteers led by Col. Patrick Conner marched from Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City to the Utah-Idaho border and slaughtered about 300 Shoshoni Indians on the suspicion that they were “harassing” white settlers.
What’s interesting is that when 120 white Protestants are massacred, it becomes a story that is told and retold with every twist of prejudice the storyteller can dream up. But when 300 Native Americans are killed, it’s not even a footnote. Yes, the victors really do write the history books. Was this review helpful? Ignoring both highly significant and pertinent historical data and research, the film creators chose to tell an entertaining story (or at least tried to) over an accurate story--something which is both careless and disrespectful when addressing such a sensitive issue. If one wants to know the true story of Mountain Meadows read either Juanita Brook's book or Sally Denton's book; don't watch this movie hoping to learn something. Was this review helpful? It is definately a part of our history that Americans need to remember. Religious fanatics live in every country and every faith. This isn't an anti-Mormon film. It is an anit-hate film. This isn't a documentary. It isn't suppose to be. It's a movie worth seeing and discussing. It's a thought-provoking film that's a pleasant relief from the summer CGI overload. This movie is mean spirited and way too far over the top. No one questions that this massacre took place. The LDS church has never hidden this fact nor has it denied that members of its church participated in the massacre. The event is a true tradgedy in American history. However, this film is so melodramatic and stereotypical of mormons that it looses all credibility. The effect of all of this is the cheapening of the event itself reducing it to a crudely drawn caricature. I hope that educated people do not judge their mormon friends and neighbors today on what was done 150 years ago by an isolated group of people. This movie will likely cause more religious intolerance than it could ever prevent. What a tradgedy! Was this review helpful? I have an original journal from this event. This event was kept from being exposed. If you were to go to the website about this event you can read allot of actual information. They are having a 150th anniversary of the event in Utah starting September 5th. Most of the families will be represented there. The movie takes an honest look at the tragedy that happened. I applaud the movie for having the honesty to tell the story to the world. Was this review helpful? Overdone, overworked, under researched, misleading!!!! The characters are so narrowly painted that they all seem either completely evil or completely good! The critics are right on this one....bad bad bad! This deserves minus stars! In the negative in every way! Was this review helpful? This movie was well-acted, spell-binding, and what I believe to be pretty much the truth of what happened in 1857. How many Indians were really left in Utah by 1857? Not many. So who murdered those people? How many other wagon trains of Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-10 of 10 Per Page | ||
