Well the GOP sure has changed as did the Democrats since the party of Lincoln. I researched Thaddeus Stevens ( Rep from Lancaster, PA) and to my surprise the movie was pretty much on song. One comment in the movie that I think now belongs to the GOP is that (sorry, some) "white people do not want to share the bounty of this great nation with black people" or for that matter (Real Americans the Indians', Asians' or Hispanics') . In those times the Good Old Boys did not even want women to have a say, sound familiar. Greed and power ruled the day then as it does now but the parties have changed. I am going to research this and find out when the pendulum switched. Take a look at the crowd at any rally and then you decide and be fair the occasional person does not count . I would be very proud to be a Republican in the time of Lincoln. Just think what big corporations would give for free labor now. OK, enough said back to the movie.
Well written and acted by all, not sure if I would give Mrs. Lincoln (Sally Field) a node for best supporting actress maybe. She was just not there enough for me nor had a commanding enough role. For sure William Seward (David Strathairn) and Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones) I can get behind. From what I can find out it was somewhat fact based with a little embellishment on Stevens Spielberg's part, I'm sure.
Scenes were quite real and comments on both the sides of the isle were quite interesting and maybe on song for the times. Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis ) is very good here and should get an Oscar node. I liked the pace of the movie and the Cinematography as well. Times were hard then as they are now and this movie showed it. I am glad I went to see this one and I encourage every person in this country and even the world for that matter to have a look at this movie. . Was this review helpful? Better than expectedNot particularly great acting or directing or anything else really but I couldn't take my eyes off of it. No niceties here, just the real world most of us know, unless were wealthy. Pot smoking, threesomes, pissed off veterans, violence over drug turf, dirty cops, etc. Benecio Del Toro plays the most evil dude you can imagine, and I mean that, murder, rape, etc. no end to the violence, kidnappings. Lots of pretty people screwing, lots of money in briefcases, etc. A good cast, a good movie. This was well done in my opinion. Was this review helpful? My wife, son and I were pleasantly surprised by the plot, acting and directing. Maybe not a must see but definitely a great way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy (or hot) summer afternoon. I had doubts about watching it but, I can tell you it was a great Movie. It's worth seeing! Here lately all you have is a whole lot of junk in the theatre and it's a good change from watching superhero movies and a whole lot of corny movies which I am becoming totally burned out on ! The movie is unpredictable and intense. Strong performances by all the cast. Loved Salma Hayek's b@*%hy, balls busting ways, yet showing a motherly side in the movie role. Also love Elena's hair and clothes. Very impressed with Taylor's bad ass role in the movie. Hope he continues to play more of those roles. Aaron.. a.sexy surprise. Very entertaining movie! No real relationship building amoung lead characters. My friend and I decided that the show should have been called, "Barbie, Ken and GI Joe Vs the whole Mexican cartel which consisted only of one great big dirty guy with strange hair and Selma!" this movie $@&*s ass. unoriginal , drugs , gangs , killings , all been done before a thousand times and a thousand times better ...to me it was a bore-fest ... sure they have some pretty big name but that's about it ... nothing shocking nor interesting there ... it's like watching an updated version (but not updated for the better_) of Natural Born Killers or some crap.
So tired of the same ol'...
