Running with Scissors was not a comedy that could translate to the big screen like Sideways. If we were to compare Running with Scissors, the book, to something on TV or the movies, it would most aptly be compared to Dr. 90210 or some other show on plastic surgery. The majority of the time youre gasping in horror or turning away in disgust as the camera zooms in to show the viewers the close-up of the blood and the fat, and you let out an occasional guffaw at the absurdity of the 24 year old who says she just knows her life would be complete if she got her breasts enlarged and her lips injected. And even though theres a resolution at the end of the show, youre not sure if you like final product more than what they started with, and have to question if progress was really made. Nobody who has read Running with Scissors would tell you its a light-hearted comedy with a happy ending. In reading the book, you might let out a short laugh once or twice, and then feel like a horrible person immediately after. Because the book isnt funny. Its awful. Its messed up. Its sad. Youre enraged at all the characters enraged at them for their actions and at the same time you feel sorry for them, because they couldnt have done all of this to themselves. The issue with Running with Scissors, the movie, is not that its not funny, or that it has disturbing, uncomfortable scenes and unlikeable characters. The issue is that it was marketed as a comedy. Its not a comedy, its this boys screwed up life and he had make light of it at points so that he could deal with everything around him. The main character absorbs everything that happened and moves on at the end of the book. Lets all get over ourselves and do the same.

Although some truly noteworthy performances speckle this ridiculous film, its hard to ignore the fact that a nonsensical plot about an exceedingly dysfunctional family is only entertaining for the first half-hour then you realize that the film is going nowhere. A few hysterical scenes cannot compensate for the prolonged bizarreness that blankets the film, lending to confusion as to what is meant to be purposely absurd and what is unintentionally funny. Watching Running with Scissors is like being in a room with people so hip that theyre desperately trying to get the joke 3 seconds before everyone else so that they can show you how smart they are. The problem is that most of the movie isnt funny so what happens is you get something like this We see a scene of a dirty kitchen so a single woman three rows up laughs while everyone else sits in stony silence. Theres a scene in which a 35 year old man uncomfortably thanks the teenage boy he just violated sexually and one guy 4 seats over bursts out laughing by himself. A mentally disturbed, prescription drug taking mother puts all of her dishes in the backyard and a lone guffaw from the upper left corner wafts over audience. Say what? This movie was more depressing than looking at stack of human skulls in Cambodia. This movie is about a boy who is abandoned by his alcoholic father and mentally ill mother when hes a teenager, and the family that adopts him consists of a woman who eats dog food, a religious zealot who tortures cats, a dangerously inept psychologist who gives away free samples of prescription drugs, not to mention the child molesting 35 year old schizophrenic and the slutty daughter. Move over Robin Williams. Hilarity ensues. I promise you, that if a man with Downs Syndrome was making a butter sandwich last night at least one person would have laughed. Ive never seen a movie in which people were so straining so hard to find something funny. You know that television commercial in which the guy is on the airplane, and his headphones arent working so he laughs in all of the wrong places? 10 bucks says he was watching Running with Scissors.

I received an oppurtunity to pre-screen this film and was really looking forward to how a wonderful book would play on-screen. I was a poor attempt indeed with the characters manic nature and confused dialogue overpowering the storyline. If you liked the royal tennebaums then you may be able to enjoy the film but I found it irritating at best and absurb at worst

Augusten Burroughs four-year-old book, Running With Scissors, which is topping the paperback best-seller lists again now that its a movie, is supposed to be a memoir. Why, then, does it feel so false? Theres a calculated eccentricity about Burroughs stranger-than-fiction book and writer-director Ryan Murphys unsatisfying film version. Everyones a kinky caricature, sentimentally celebrated for their perversity, even if much of their behavior is ultimately wasteful and self-destructive. Working in the immodestly expressive, every-room-a-set-piece spirit of Wes Anderson, first-time director Murphy, armed with the best 70s pop studio money can buy, renders the books boy-in-a-bubble claustrophobia capably-which has its disadvantages in terms of perspective. Staying indoors for most of the decade, the movie makes nothing of the irony that this adopted child of the freaky-deaky counterculture would find himself in the year of Ronald Reagans election. Still, tone is everything in a dark-comic farce, and Murphy pulls it off. Like the book, this deadpan celebration of neurosis makes a valiant effort to repress its comedy-which of course makes it funnier. But you know, the movies too outlandish to be fully convincing, this adaptation of the best-selling memoir sacrifices subtlety for broad laughs. And yet, the movie falls flattest when its trying to be funny.

I cant write a review for a movie that hasnt arrived in theatres. Im not sure how others can either but somehow they have managed to review the book and give an opinion of whether the movie looks appealing to them. What a great help that was. Not.

Having just finished the book Running with Scissors and its sequel Dry, I was interested to discover that it was being made into a film. I myself do not plan to see it, simply because I like the book as it is. However, I think it will be a GREAT film if well done and encourage others to enjoy it. But I will give viewers some advice, if you havent read the book , please be aware that this may be DISTURBING or UNCOMFORTABLE for some viewers, even in an adult audiance. Yes, If its anything like the book, viewer discretion is advised.

From the preview, I see this as an offbeat coming-of-age that might just be enjoyable. Brian Cox, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes. It looks quite well cast, and the fact that its a personal memoir may be...intruiging. Im gonna see it. You should too.
