Adapted from Ira Levin's horror bestseller, the movie works, mainly because we are teased along the way with the possibility that this is the case. Polanski does a good job of never showing any horrible images and letting our imagination conjure up the possibilities.
Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes play the lead characters with great skill. Was this review helpful? Although now I'm a little afraid of chocolate mousse... or the chocolate MOUSE... Was this review helpful? I thought some of the things in it were obvious and it made it not as scary. I thought the ending should have been different because it ruins it, for me at least. Was this review helpful? It is also certainly the most faithful to its source than perhaps any movie ever made. The foreshadowing in this film is geneous. The first time you saw it did you get the blocked closet?...why Terry killed herself?...why Guy kept leaving?... The end of the movie cuts off about 3 minutes before the end of the book would have, but part of "Rosemary's Baby's" charm is that if it were graphic (like say "The Exorcist") rather than subtle it could have been laughable. It (like two other non-Oscar best picture winners of 1968, "Planet of the Apes" and the already mentioned "Night of the Living Dead") is certainly in the top 2 or 3 greatest horror/sci fi movies ever and AFI should be ashamed of themselves for not putting it in their 100 greatest movies of all time. I rented this movie simply because I heard it was a classic that filmlovers must see, and though I am glad I watched it, I don't think it was ";horror"; scary...it was really more like a psychological thriller. Interesting, though. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 2/11/2003A review of Rosemary's Baby by cckiki Rosemary's Baby is a classic- period. It is a must see for film students and lovers of fine films. The storyline is unique and unpredictable. Only a talented director like Polanski could translate it into the kind of film it is. It is cinemagraphically rich. Was this review helpful? All 5 of us were in the car watching the huge screen with mosquito scent repellent while eating popcorn, hotdogs and drinking cola. What I recall best about the movie was its secrecy of intensity to keep us thinking till the very end. I am still baffeled to know what in the heck did Rosemarys baby look like? If anyone can elaborate on this perhaps SECOND MOVIE CAN BE BORN ;-)) just for me see how hellish oriented of a beast the baby turned out to be. Was this review helpful? I'm not a big scary movie fan because I get scared very easily. However, this one was an exception. If you're like me and get spooked easily you can handle this one. And since it's an old movie, there's actually a plot! So go rent it and have a Happy Halloween!! Was this review helpful?
