I do not understand why everyone thinks Tom Cruise was so amazing in thie movie, he is just weird the whole time. The plot meanders horribly, and the random gay scene does nothing for character, nor plot development. The chick is pretty hot, but her voice is Disney-like and gets annoying. Catherine Zeta Jones does a horrible job in her song. She looks clunky and awkward, and I didn't really like watching the Breaking Bad guy get bent over a desk by his secretary. I feel dumber for having watched the movie, and I would really like my 2 hours back. Was this review helpful? It's good, like "Chicago", is good, except for the stolen suitcase, which is probably part of a copyrighted broadway musical script, you must not leave out of your production, when your little theatre troupe takes on the challenge of this show. Jaycee Staxx should be the one to end up with that suitcase, but you can't have everything. Copyright is probably the uncomfortable feeling you get when you see this film, and the show in general, but it's all paid for, don't worry. As a movie, without knowing about the stage version, this movie is like, "Xanadu", which starred Olivia Newton John, and like "FM", which starred Martin Mull. It's a "We're gonna shut them down!", sort of thing, like "Pirate Radio" or "The Boat That Rocked". Perhaps an overused plot, but one that has a tradition in writers' schools. "To the head of the class, you!" Again as a musical made into a movie from a stage show, get ready for dancing, chorus group dancing, really good chorus group dancing, some of it around stripper poles that stay "PG-13". Come on everybody, let's get this film some attendance, and let's send this message to the polls this year, "Rock and Roll will never die!" Or, to quote Nick Danger of the Firesign Theatre, "Los Angeles, if you spell the name of my town inside out, you get "legs on sale."" I used to want to run away and join the circus. Don't know if the younger generation would go for this. M. J. Blige was great, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand really funny. In spite of the tepid reviews from the "professional reviewers", my wife and I went to Rock Of Ages and had a blast. Sure, the plot line has been done a million times but the music was absolutely great, all the performances were good to great and it was just a lot of fun. It's been a while since I went to a movie and left feeling this good. If you like rock, forget about the naysayers, see this flick and enjoy. Was this review helpful? It's a fun filled rock musical that entertains and puts a smile on your face. Everyone is great in the film, especially Tom Cruise. Geez, is there anything this guy can't do? And more importantly, is there anything this guy is afraid to do? I hope Cruise just keeps doing what Tom Cruise does better than anyone and that is to entertain us. And to all those Cruise haters I would just ask you to redirect your hate to Ryan Seacrest. He got the girl in Julianne Hough, he's got a boatload of money, and he's just a regular guy. My husband barely sat though the 1st half and fell asleep. It's a total Lip Syncing movie that seemd to drag on and on and on. I mean....maybe if there was not so much singing and more focus on the plot it would have been half way decent.......DID NOT LIKE THIS FILM AT ALL......SORRY...... Was this review helpful? That’s what happened with Rock of Ages. What complete crap. If you want to call it karaoke you will shame the Japanese. Brand X should take a Cruise on Baldwin’s Capital Card to catch a glimpse of Hough hooking on the strip. All that talent wasted. The cast was over the top and funny. Lots of humor for a musical. My wife & I enjoyed every minute. The critics have no clue if they are comparing this to the Broadway Musical by the same name or any other movie. Julianne Hough & Diego Boneta was awesome, and yes, this movie was made to be a rock musical about the 80's. Tom Cruise does a great job at bringing his character to life as a 80's rocker. I wont be a spoiler like everyone else trying to review this movie, because I believe this will be a fan favorite. Forget about all the other stuff the critics are saying and enjoy the movie for what it is. This movie was fun, and brought out the 80's in a fun and comical way. Was this review helpful? PG13 is questional. It is a fun movie, lots of laugh out loud laughs. If you don't like musicals you might still like this one.
