But thank god for the remake, Red Dragon shows how Hannibal Lecter was captured and the fear that will graham has for him. It doesn't show that Francis Dolarhyde is a pervertied murderer but that with every kill he does he becomes more, he becomes a god, he becomes The Great Red Dragon. The thrills and the twist and turns will keep you on the end of you chair until Hannibal Lecter finishes the movie by saying
"What is her name."

It seems like there are only a few scenes with him. But in my opinion, Edward Norton stole the show. Was this review helpful? I didnt really like Edward Norton, though. I dont know if it was just Will Grahams character, or Edward Norton is a horrible actor...but I noticed that Norton seemed sort of robotic. He hardly showed any emotion at all. We was very monotone. At least Jodie Foster showed emotion as Starling (she was amazing in Silence of the Lambs). Anyways, okay movie. Personally I liked Manhunter better, the only reason I like Red Dragon is because Anthony Hopkins played Lecter and he was amazing. If Lecter was in Manhunter, it would be my favorite movie. It was good and very creepy, but seems severely underrated. Now Brett Ratner (director of the Rush Hour flicks) makes Red Dragon. At first, I thought that there was no way that the guy who brought us Rush Hour and Money Talks could make a great Hannibal movie. But he does. And this movie easily outdoes the original. It doesn't rush through explanations like Manhunter, and it has better action scenes. And Edward Norton never disappoints. Overall, great Hannibal movie. Manhunter was great, but Red Dragon was and is WAY better. Was this review helpful? I can't get past the disparity of pairing Edward Norton with Hopkins. We are supposed to believe that Norton's character caught Lector. Norton, whose bleached blond hair makes him look more boyish than ever, looks like a scared pupil of Lector. I cannot believe that this brilliant psychopath was outsmarted by Norton's character. I also found that the villian in the film, Fienne's Dolarhyde, was completely benign. I was not scard of him in the least. He didn't seem like a threat, so it made Norton's search for him seem rather pointless. While the film is, on the surface, borderline decent, if you go past the facade, you see many holes in the story. Perhaps I would've liked it better had I not seen the superior adaptation of the novel, "Manhunter." "Red Dragon" pales in comparison to "Manhunter." I know that many people point out that "Red Dragon" stayed truer to Harris' novel, but it's important to remember what works best on the page does not always work best on the screen, and I think that "Manhunter" was a tighter package of a movie. See "Manhunter." Was this review helpful? This movie's a way better remake of "Manhunter." Unlike in "Manhunter," I was able to follow the story.I did see it again in theaters, it was that good. All the actors did a great job pulling together such a great book into a wonderful movie. And if you haven't seen "The Silence of the Lambs" or "Hannibal" have no fear, this movie took place before them both. And as for "Manhunter" check out "Red Dragon" just to see how much it has improved. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/5/2003A review of Red Dragon by Anonymous How do the Thomas Harris novel/movie fans feelabout the remaking of the already popular movie depiction of the novel "Red Dragon"?Doesn't the present or newer version betterfollow the novel's plot and outcome?I guess it was technically easier to do thisfor Red Dragon than for Hannibal. The latter'snovel ends with Clarice becoming somewhat of a convert for Lecter's habits especially doingin Paul Krendler, so much so that she seducesthe Doctor psychopath and becomes his wife/mistress. Hannibal the movie ended verydifferently as did the first version of RedDragon "Manhunter". I guess movie technicalitiesare directed to the higher paying audiences as they should, right?I would as always appreciate commentary.rcontaldi@hotmail.com Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/8/2003A review of Red Dragon by BlackScholarII The first in the triology is finally here-even with Agent Starling awol Ed. Norton does not disappoint. Like Starling his imagination gets him in all kinds of brushes with grimacing and evil teeth! We delve into the private life of Hannibal, the entertaining, loquacious and witty Pyschiatrist-who happens to be insane himself! Wouldn't you have to be to eat someone's liver with fava beans and a scrumptous chianti? The Red Dragon is a simile of sorts. The latest serial killer has a penchant for the arts and humanities with a fetish for the latter. Hannibal shows us the intricacies of manipulation, his intellect very clever-as most criminal geniuses are!Warning! Do not take your children under the age of 13 to see this movie-if their birthday is the following day after the Movie opens-WAIT! The murder scenes are gory! The mind of a pyschopath should not be put on display for the kindegarteners and the rompers. This film is a must see for criminal justice majors, wannabe lawyers, judges, and officers of the law! I wonder what Hannibal's Home Economics teacher thinks about that delicious pie he made that everyone loved back when he was in high school-except that one student who was abscent that day? Anthony hopkins reprises the role as Hannibal lecter to deadly effect, adding intense fear to an addictive plot superbly written and directed. The whole feeling and care injected into this movie make it even better the more times you watch it. Was this review helpful? The assembled talent is top notch, it is great to look at, but the film as a whole fails to come together. Hopkins, who is supposed to be younger than he was in Silence of the Lambs, looks older, which of course is no fault of his own, he is after all older. Lecter is mainly a supporting player in this film, which initially served to introduce the character. The main focus is on Ed Norton's quest to find the Tooth Fairy. Norton is usually excellent but here is miscast as a burnt out FBI agent. Ralph Fiennes is great as the Tooth Fairy, one of the scariest villains as well as the most "; human "; to be seen on the screen in some time. The supporting cast is fine but Ratner's direction does little to create any real tension. We've seen it all before. Most disappointing is the sound. There is very little use of the rear channels, which if used properly could have pulled the viewer in to the story. Was this review helpful? I didn't see Manhunter or Hannibal, but when I saw Red Dragon I must say that I was impressed. -Anthony Hopkins returns as the scary, intelligent, and dangerous Hannibal the Cannibal. Anthony did great in this movie (considering he spent the entire movie behind a cell wall). He takes you into the disturbing realms of the mind of a derranged killer.-Harvey Keitel plays the retired special agent who caught Lecter and has been called back to find a killer called the tooth fairy. Keitel played this part very well and was awesome at the end. -I don't remember the Red Dragons name, but he did the best in the movie. He played the part of a psychologically disturbed Francis Dollarhyde who after suffering years of abuse finally snapped and starts killing people. He truly shows the dark side of a man with whom the demon resides and he makes you feel bad when he tries to stop. -Overall I'd buy the DVD. This was a keeper. Was this review helpful? Then I read reviews saying Manhunter was better, so I rented it. I was very disapointed. The atmosphere, style, and suspense of Red Dragon are far superior. The acting, direction, and writing of Red Dragon make Manhunter look like a made for TV movie you might find on the Lifetime network. I saw Red Dragon twice, then bought the DVD. Get the special Director's edition to see all the special features. Edward Norton and Ralph Feines are perfect together. Ralph's protral of Mr. D is absolutly frightning. The plot is so engrossing, you'll be talking to the screen half-way into the movie. Norton pulls so much from Dr. Lector (Anthony Hopkins) and uses it with Feines to make a stunning performce.
