Date ![]() Helpful Rating 2 out of 2 users found this helpful I too often fall asleep on even the most exciting
films..and when'Red Dawn' played on TV recently,
against my will, it happened again. However, I was
able to see most of the movie before it
happened, though I missed the ending.
RED DAWN is often sneered at. Why?? Given the premise of the film,
(Soviets invading the U.S.--which of course
history did not bear out)--it is very well written,
directed and acted. It opens as some all-American kids and their teacher look out the window..to see Soviet paratroopers landing! The teacher goes out to
investigate, and is shot dead! The students who are still alive head for the hills, to fight.
The young men (later joined by two young women) grow up fast.A moving scene shows them hiding, as POWs
are rounded up.The Rusians are singing "The Inter-
nationale"--then the prisoners sing "America The Beautiful"..until all are shot, the song disappearing in a hail of bullets.Another moving scene shows the father of our chief hero (Patrick Swayze) and his
brother, "visiting" their father..who has been sent a, er.. "re-education camp." Their speaking through
barbed ire and the father's parting words, "Avenge
Me!" must bring chills to anyone familiar with WWII.
We also see a Russian soldier, writing letters to
wife: sick of war, he just wants to get back to her.Of course, he was killed too.. Corny? Maybe. But it was very well acted, and is a nice anti-stereotype device..
Seeing RED DAWN, I thought of the guffaws of movie critics.. Yes, the premise does seem a bit implausible. Or did. Until now. Now, sadly, one can easily
change the idea of Soviet invaders with that of,
shudder!..Osama's invaders..!
RED DAWB is a prescient warning.
Yes, our government and armed services can prevent such events from occuring..but citizens can't expect them to do it all. "Eternal Vigilance Is The Price Of Liberty"--and, whether from Osama or from abuses of the "Patriot" Act, we must sadly, always be on our guard. Was this review helpful?
