Date  Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  Ahhh, So-SoI would not make this film to be great,like the original (with Borgnine & Hackman).The action scenes are powerhouse, but this leaves off on sentimentality and human emotions; I think there was also a lack, in a "power struggle". I enjoyed the Borgnine and Hackman war more. They were 2 kings who fought for Domination of the "throne".I would not say it was excellent, but this movie sure packs a punch! Was this review helpful? This movie had the most horrible dialogue I have ever heard, and what the heck was Kurt Russell doing in it? He was not a convincing father at all. I got about 30 minutes into the movie and couldnt stand it. Please, anyone who reads this, see another movie! I love disaster movies in general and was not in the least disappointed by this movie. For those of you wanting so much character development, read a book then. Honestly, how much character development and history can you expect from a group of people who are trying to stay alive. Surely, they arent going to chit chat about themselves when faced with such harrowing circumstances. Would you be able to? If so, you would be one of the first ones dead. People forget one of the main reasons for watching a movie is to be entertained. If you experience suspension of disbelief then the movie succeeded. If you laughed, cried, or were at the edge of your seat, then the movie succeeded. AGAIN, for those wanting such character development, read a novel, or wait for the prequel or sequel. Throughout the entire time, youre full of SUSPENSE and you dont know whats going to happen next. I definitely recommend it!!! Was this review helpful? Every minute of the movie was predictable and it was pretty hard to care about any of the characters. And how can you have Richard Dryfuss in a movie and make him boring? This movie succeeded. But if your looking for an action flick that you can get up and leave and come back and still not miss anything this is the one for you. From the stunning opening sequence - a 3 minute wrap around of the majestic ocean liner (accompanied by one of the best title scores ever written) - to the mind-blowing capsize sequence, to the claustrophobic escape, this movie delivers the goods. Its great, mindless, summertime fluff.
But might I suggest you head out and buy the book on which this film is (oh so loosely) based Paul Gallicos The Poseidon Adventure. Two paperback versions were re-released this past spring and are still available. The book is a tour-de-force of survival at sea - deep in character study - dark and psychological. Gallico leaves the reader breathless.
In the first film adaptation of the story (1972) the characters became pretty cardboard and basic, but still you rooted for them during their escape attempt. In this 2006 version theyve been jettisoned all together and replaced by passengers who are so watered down you couldnt care less about them. Mark Protosevichs screenplay is abysmal. (There is a reason Heath Ledger and Clive Owen signed on and then opted out of doing the film after seeing the script.) Warner Bros. and Wolfgang Petersen could have produced a classic sea tale this summer - if they had taken the time to do so. But they didnt and all were left with is this mindless but visually stunning summertime action movie.
I cant help but feel sorry for Gallicos original vision. It SO deserves to be told properly on the big screen and after two so-so attempts (three, if you include the horrid made for TV version from 2005) it is doubtful it will be told on film again anytime soon. But definately put this one a look. Its a great 90 minute rollercoaster ride! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful B-I saw this movie in IMAX, which made it more exciting. I thought it was a worth seeing film, but something I could only watch twice. Whoever liked this, I agree, we need good actors like this. The storyline was just okay. I thought it was sort of fake when the man dives into gasoline water and swam across like 50 feet of gasoline, or when Kurt Russell swims 150 feet across the ship, under water. Overall, it had its pros and cons, but it was worth seeing. Was this review helpful? thats wxactly how i felt when i watched this movie...
the effects are pretty realistic and the music as i think played an important part in making this movie seem real...
by the way i liked fergies song ... im a huge fan if her...

I mean it is completely amazing. The movie is full of suspene and at times will leave you grasping the arm rest very very tightly. The acting wasnt amazing but it was good enough to get that thrilling and shocking essence. They rushed into the movie a bit to fast so it was quite short but trust me, its so worth going to. They should have had more character development at the start but i cant complain because you will feel the agony that the characters go through. When they are sad, happy, devestated or simply thinking you feel like youre actually there beside them feeling and going through this diasaster with them. I think that the story was very well planned out and gave a very satisfactory result. And the effects were made perfectly, nothing wrong with the wave. The edititg could have been better though. I think the casting director did a fantatstic job and whoever designed the setting and the boat did an excellent job. The mess and chaos after the wave hit was just right to create the wanting to survive atmosphere. The only thing that bugged is that the characters seemed to have sper breath and they could stay under water for a long time. I mean its good and all and most cases is realistic but still some parts are just not right. But still this story of survival, love and following your instinct is a great one. Personally, I came to see Kirk Russell as he is quite a hunk to look at. I have watched him as a child actor and seen how he has developed in the acting profession.
I like the fact that the action starts right up front. The scenes in this new adaption with the bodies crashing and all hell breaking loose was terrific. But like the first original film, it calmed down and you had to pay especially attention to the main characters. But that is what this film is all about. It picks you up and then leaves you to thinking how do we get the hell of this ship!
The effects were great and the cast were strong enough to carry you through the ordeal and to rescue.
It made me forget all my problems at home. Go and see it if you have nothing else to do...you wont fall asleep.
Now, I think I will cancel that cruise this summer! Was this review helpful? some parts were so scary i wanted to cover my eyes, but you couldnt not watch. one problem was that the characters didnt really develop. but otherwise, it was really good. the characters were seconds away from death (one guy almost dying about 10 times!) and yet getting away. action packed story about survival from beginning to end. but a bit lame of an ending, id have to admit. but, cant wait to get it when it comes out on DVD! Although I havent seen the original, I would have guessed it would be greater than its remake. There were parts that were intensely scary, like seeing the bloody sight of badly scorched corpses everywhere, seeing the ship slowly flipping over as the it got struck by the enormous sunami wave, and people crashing through several stories until hitting the ground. I suggest that one scene is the moment of the whole movie, then the rest of the movie drags on with people trying to find ways to survive. Its like Titanic in reverse. There did not seem to be much of a point to all of it. Ship gets tipped over. People die fatally or suffer from severe injuries. The survivors struggle to find a way out of the ship. They get rescued by a bunch of helicopters right when the boat sinks. Eventually everything was going to work well whichever way you put it. It was just the thrill of the movie that left you hanging of the edge of your seat. The only trouble with this movie is that it doesnt let you know all about the characters, and just leaves you wondering about the bonding relationship between that old man and the young girl he tried to save after her life was taken by a horrible bump in the head.
