Though I'm not much of a Katie Holmes fan, I sincerely enjoyed both her performance and Patricia Clarkson. Though the story is really about April (Holmes), it's her mother (Clarkson) that really steals the show. It's a very true, funny, and touching portrayal of a dysfunctional family at Thanksgiving. I recommend it to anyone who has dealt with their quirky family during the holidays... Was this review helpful? As a result, I had already formed my own conclusions on the reasons behind this obviously preordained disastrous family get-together (The main one being: “There is no reason for family and daughter to get together – just enjoy the interesting interactions!”).
The ending was satisfying, but it wasn’t until many hours later that everything clicked and the actual dynamics between daughter and mother and family fell into place!
Now I may just be a little slow; but I am curious whether this quirk was experienced by others. It may be intentional. Any movie that keeps me thinking about it for hours afterwards has merit!
Was this review helpful? I used to think these kids should stick to TV and not make the cheesy movies they usually make. I am not a Katie Holmes fan, although she does deserve praise for choosing good movies to appear in (with the possible exception of Abandon- terrible movie despite the yummy Benjamin Bratt, but that's another story).
I saw this movie because my 12-year old niece wanted to see it. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie was really good. The script was exceptional, the direction was excellent and the acting was great, including Ms. Holmes'. This is now my favorite Thanksgiving-dysfunctional-family movie. I can't wait to buy the DVD. Was this review helpful? In the first 5 minutes I was concerned some of the more mainsteam in the audience might walk out, me included. It seemed dark and grainy in tone and screen. However the great cast of characters quickly built interest, brginning with the moment the mother is seen waaiting in the car before anyone else is even awake. That got a whole lot of ha-has. In a nutshell the story of a lower middle class dysfunctional family with a rogue daughter living a strange life in NYCity and a miss perfect daughter at home. The family's travel to the city for Tgiving dinner reminded me of a macabre version of the car drive on Nat Lampoons Vacation! I thought April's growth as a person all during the frantic food preparation disasters was thoughtfully done. The twist at the end that actually makes the dinner take place was wonderful. They all were different people at the end of the day than they were at the beginning. Not a big money crafted film, but a significant one. Was this review helpful? The story moves well and the photography captures each element in the group dynamics without missing a beat.
It is certainly not to be missed.
Well Done everyone. Was this review helpful? Although, it isn't much of a long stretch from her character in Dawson's creek, "the diverse, yet lower class family atmosphere", my expectations are trusting. As a result of her edgy on-going movie career from the past, Ms. Holmes will undoubtedly, prove her ability to shine as a rising star. The most attention grabing part, is it's attept to define hollywood's new era of independent films. I think the cinematography is exceptional. It captures a since of realism on what we lower-class calls "the streets". Dre Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-7 of 7 Per Page | ||
