At times the story is hard to believe but if the story is viewed as a fairy tale there is no disapointment. Was this review helpful? This movie is truly a study in insanity and obsession-- a case study in the development of a psychopath. While at first you are tempted to sympathesize with a child born into such horrible circumstances, your sympathy soon turns to horror as his deprived childhood (NOT a cliche here!) leads him down darker and more twisted paths. He is clever and gifted and frightening in his drive to pursue his own desires at the expense of every human around him.
Some of the scenes were shocking in their intensity-- smelling a young girl's naked corpse as if he were consuming, eating it. Shiver. No emotion, just the fixation to consume and capture and hold. True psychopathology. Brilliantly acted and skillfully directed. Alan Rickman is superb as the anxious father. The women are luminous and wonderful-- until they die. The ending is beyond odd and a bit of a let down.
Glad I saw it. Glad I don't ever have to see it again. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/17/2007A review of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by coraus1 One sentence right about sums this movie:
There is no other movie like it.
This movie is unlike anything you've ever seen, and having said that be prepared to expect the unexpected. I definitely liked this movie in the sense that its original, and therefore shocking. Definitely worth watching! Was this review helpful? Well, from the very beginning this movie sets itself apart from other period pieces in that it shows you the ugly underbelly of 18th century society. Throughout the movie I was wishing the main character would take a bath and clean up. Nevertheless, it is a very unique and interesting movie on a subject that I have never seen on screen, so I liked it. For a moment I believed it was a true story, but that went out the window in the last 20 minutes of the movie, which I found both ridiculous and disturbing. In the end, its still worth watching. At times it was tragic but essentially came across as horror camp towards the end. Perhaps its a reflection of the difference in cultures and expectations of european vs. american audiences. (or perhaps due to editing). View with complete suspension of disbelief and youll enjoy it. Was this review helpful? Having said that, this movie is a one-of-a-kind attempt to capture the audience with a story that you have never seen before in a trully entertaining fashion. One of the tricks that the directors used in the making of this movie was with the cameras. In one scene the main character is smelling a young girl. What makes this scene unique is that her body looks like a painting in real time. I thought that was very interesting. As I watched the movie a few people walked out, and I can understand why this movie isnt for your average movie-goer. This is a good movie worth the watch for anyone who considers themselves in the arts. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-7 of 7 Per Page | ||
