Date  Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  Pathfinder Couldnt Find His WayPosted: 4/23/2007A review of Pathfinder by Lightsinger_1 I love movies and it takes a lot to make me want to walk out of a movie, but this one got on my last nerve. The premise had so much promise and any movie with Karl Urban in a loin cloth has possibilities...but there were so many things wrong with the movie, I couldnt even begin to list them.
The cinematography was interesting, and I didnt object to the graphic, often senseless violence, but where the heck was this supposed to be happening?? I thought the Vikings came to the EASTERN seaboard...where did they get those very Pacific northwest mountains??
At least they did have the Vikings speaking the language, and Ghost had clearly not forgotten his native tongue...that made sense, but very little else did. One moment the Vikings are dousing their torches so as not to give away their approach when trailing the Indians, but they cant resist the urge to blow a horn to announce where they are? Huh?
So if you know absolutely nothing about history, geography and your only exposure to these things is through video games, you might find this entertaining and action packed. I cant describe how disappointed I was, even with Karl Urban in a loin cloth. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  Brutal yet elegaic...Posted: 4/22/2007A review of Pathfinder by jnesbitt3 PATHFINDER was somewhat of a pleasant surprise for me. I went in expecting the film to be the usual gimmicky hack and slash revenge movie, but this was, thankfully, not to be. What we have instead is a film with a true emotional core a main character with some genuine impetus behind his actions.
The very idea of a young Viking being accepted into Native American culture is certainly a dramatic idea. Just through body language and interaction, the viewer can easily recognize that the cross-cultural bond is one that was earned, but respected by each party. Actor Karl Urban as Ghost brought a (mostly) silent intensity of sorrow and anger to his performance. Granted, both the Native American (more specifically the Wampanoag Tribe) and Viking portrayals as seen in the film exhibit, to a point, a stereotypical slant, but never do they become cartoonish in any way. That is perhaps the highest praise I can give this film.
Yes, it is in essence a story of revenge, but it is a revenge that is truly earned and harrowing in its excecution. Adding a further layer to this, the delicate romantic courtship between Ghost (Urban) and Starfire (Moon Bloodgood) is wonderfully handled. As the lovers face the realization that by guiding the Viking warriors to their people, the destruction of all they know may be very near. Keeping that conflict in mind is what impacted me so dramatically in the third act of the film.
In short, if one goes into this with hopes of seeing a stylized slashfest similar to 300, you will be sadly disappointed. What unfolds instead is an unyielding story of what happens when a brutal violence comes to a peaceful land and the desperate struggle to battle for what you hold dear. I left the theatre wondering what the world would be like if more of us fought for what we believe in and found the path of honor and pride! Was this review helpful? The photography seemed all black and white, except for some red blood thrown in every 2 minutes. All cutting, stabbing, killing, senseless violence, and bad dark photography. It was so dark, couldnt see what was going on. I didnt care for anyone in the movie and didnt get to know the characters. The lead role had a good face and nice eyes. The close-ups of him were the only redeeming quality of this movie!
This movie really gets zero stars from me. Yes, Im a Kindergarten teacher, but I loved Braveheart, Conan the Barbarian, and Scorpion King. This movie was awful. Saw it with my husband and son-in-law and daughter. We all gave it an F. We will definitely read reviews before just picking a movie next time, so it was our fault we went before doing a bit of research. This movie is not worth renting the DVD or even the time spent watching it on T.V. A total waste. Was this review helpful? It is a little glimpse of what the Viking invasion mustve been like to the native americans. Only Vikings would want to acquire such inhospitable land, because it probably reminded them of home, brrrr!. The main character reminded me of Tarzan and the rest of the cast did a decent job. Between Native Indians ( which speak perfect Harvard English by the way) who rescue a young Viking boy who eventually turns out to be an action hero that creates man traps and uses camouflage to defeat a platoon of hungry Vikings to the cheesy avalanche insert footage this movie left me bored, cold and on verge of hypothermia. All Karl Urban needed was a head band and larger than life knife with a sewing kit and compass in the handle to make the wardrobe complete. Yo Adrian, I didnt abandon my country, it abadoned me Colonel. You get the picture.....
The most exciting thing about this Rambo ripoff was trying to stay awake long enough to finish a medium popcorn and diet coke. Clancy must owe creditors some big money or was bitten by a rabid animal to have been invovled with this production. I vote rabid animal.....by the way fire your agent.....brrrrrrrrrr Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful crapPosted: 4/16/2007A review of Pathfinder by ballsaroonovich ok, i tried to sit through it and get used to the pace, terrible acting and story line. it was cheesy and the i felt like i was watching a low budget b movie. the costumes and settings were cool but that was all that i found redeeming about it. after about 30 minutes of torture my girl and i agreed that leaving was the best option. i had no expectations but thought that it would actually be good from what i had seen from the trailer...what a dissapointment! fortunately i was in a cineplex and was able to get into another movie that i actually stayed, enjoyed, and watched to the end. pathfinder got lost in the doo doo... They depicted the indians in a way that reminded me of how they have been depicted in the past in a stereotypical way which may have been intentional or not. The movie was indeed very gray and dim but it wasnt a bad movie. The story was simply a from point A to point B film and if you like that sort of thing, with a bit of gory graphic scenes tossed in here and there mixed with sword fighting, then this is for you. I personally liked it and think its a good way to just pass the time and kill an hour and a half. If you dont want to spend 8 bucks, be a smart person and go see the early showing and save some cash for a candy bar after the film. Was this review helpful? I also enjoy the relationship between the Vicking guy and the Idian girl very sweet and refreshing the end was priceless. The fighting skills and strength he use to help his new people were just so amazing. I think the darkness and the way they lived recaption that period in time. Was this review helpful? My husband and I after seeing the previews were looking forward to this movie. But he didnt like the lighting either, everything was dark and dim. The previews about the movie stated extreme violence but there was less here then in 300. The lighting here didnt make the movie, the coloring and lighting fit 300. Its an OK movie but it didnt take my breath away. Its better as a rental then spending 8.50 plus popcorn Was this review helpful? After I watched it, I thought it was..ok. First, in the beginning of the movie Karl Urban didnt talk but later he did which I find quite weird. The movie is all about fighting and alot of blood and alot of fighting too. You really need to read the subtitles when the Vikings speak in order to understand what this movie is about. And also there were a couple of scary images in the movie. Other than that it was ok. Just a bit of advice go see this movie so that you have your own opinion for it.
P.S Karl Urban was really hot in the movie and hes a good fighter too! Was this review helpful? U get a new and original story though kinda of a last of the mohican feel (watch you ll get it)fighting and action scenes alone are worth the price and the acting though not oscar worthy isnt shabby i wanted to give it 5 stars but it was just missing something to me.
