The meaning behind each part of Janies life has a lesson and her character just makes you believe in happiness in the end.

I absolutely LOVED this movie. To be honest, when I first read the novel more than 10 years ago, I was a bit bored. Perhaps I wasn't mature enough to understand it back then. However, the movie made me want to read the book again. That movie was absolutely fabulous! I loved it.. from start to finish! I haven't stopped talking about it since it aired... and it's now late April! Oprah, if you're reading this review, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE release this movie on DVD. I want to watch it again and again! In fact, a co-worker tape-recorded the movie and let me borrow her tape. I keep making up excuses as to why I haven't returned it! I need my own copy! At any rate, the entire cast was excellent. The settings and costuming were wonderful. The acting was superb! The screenplay adaptation from the book was done very well. Yes, books can always capture more than the screenplay, but I think the job done in this movie was fantastic! Who cares that Tea Cake was dark-skinned in the book, and a lighter complexion in the movie? Michael Ealy got the job done! In fact, I never really even noticed him in his other movies (Barbershop 1 & 2), but his portrayal of Tea Cake in "Their Eyes Were Watching God" was unforgettable! If you haven't seen the movie, the next time it comes on, put the kids to bed, grab some snacks and tissues, sit down, watch and enjoy! This, by far, has been my favorite movie... in a very long time! In case I haven't said it enough, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Thanks Oprah, Halle and the rest of the cast! Now, Oprah, I'm still waiting on that DVD!

Well i did not read the book, but Oprah managed to depict it in such a wonderful way, that im actually enticed to read it. Halle Berry did a wonderful job of playing that character(don't remember the name) and her last love interest also evoked a strong screen presence ( also not sure of his name). The composure of the movie was well done, as it kept my attention. The movie began with her walking in the town in over-alls, dirty and worn out. This alone made me want to find out what was the cause of her condition. Let me get to the point. The reason why I love this movie is because: 1. Halle Berry is beautiful 2.The kissing scene was breath-taking. 3.It made me want to actually live in that era. 4.great cinematography (do i even know what that means?) 5.I could go on... JUST WATCH THE MOVIE.. To be honest, if i were in her position at the end of the movie, I would kill myself. You need to watch it to understand why. What's the point of living if such a lovely thing like that were to come to an abrupt end. From such a miserable beginning to a complexed romantic end...It was so captivating, that i actually shed a few tears.

The movie was basically crap, to say the least. The characters were way out of context, and few, if any of the important features of the novel were addressed. The pear tree, which was of tremendous significance in the book was on screen for a total of, oh, about five seconds. And apparently, Halle Berry has lived up to her terrible year in the celebrity world. Her character was not portrayed at all like the Janie Crawford in Zora Neale Hurston's novel. And as for Tea Cake, played by Michael Ealy, was written as a dark-skinned man was destroyed: the movie showed him as a light-skinned (like Janie, and completely wrong), opened shirt, lusty, sweaty man that's addicted to sex. So many scenes were cut out, perhaps to deal with time, as there is a limit on how long a television movie can be, but the scenes ignored were the SETTING of the book, and the movie tossed them about as if they were animal remains. It's a perfect movie, however, if you love to sit down and watch "lusty" movies. Who'd have though that a guy would get excited by licking a bloody, raw shrimp from his lover's hand?
