If only Sean Connery was able to take the lead roll instead of George Lazenby - I have nothing against him, but he can't hold a candle to Connery. Still though, the film itself was good.

Imagine, a Bond film worth arguing about! More than three decades after its release generated yawns, OHMSS sparks debates between those who claim it is `revered' because they like it, and those who say it's the worst Bond ever because they missed the Roger Moore era. Meanwhile, most viewers see an entertaining but deeply flawed film. It's a noble attempt to shake up the Bond formula, and works in spots. There is the question of what drugs Saltzman and Broccoli were on when they thought that male model George Lazenby could replace Sean Connery. But Lazenby looks the part, and seems to grow into it during the course of the film. He's actually OK in some of the quieter moments, and handles the action well. While not all her predecessors are bimbos, cleavage-challenged Diana Rigg represents a departure from the `Bond girl' formula. Rigg's Tracy is nothing like the ennui-drenched, blonde bombshell, Eurotash Mob countess Ian Fleming describes in the book. But she is an intelligent actress and handles the action scenes well. It's just bad luck that Rigg and Lazenby feuded off screen, and she overwhelms him on screen. Telly Savalas is also a fish-outta-watah as villain Blofeld, but obviously relishes the part, and Ilse Steppat makes a great henchwoman. First-time director Peter Hunt was great on the technical side, but less certain handling actors. That's bad news for Lazenby, but the action scenes were great for the time and the film still looks good. Ultimately, Fleming and the screenwriters don't succeed in wedding a love story to the same-old-Bond antics. But much of the ride is fun.

Great story, action, everything, BUT! There is a big BUTT! And that is...where is Bond? He is surely not in this movie.

Posted: 12/13/2002A review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service by MajorFuBar
Short shrift to this Bond indeed. It seems as tho everyone got wedded to the idea that Sean Connery was the 'only' James Bond. Too many people dismissed George Lazenby as a 'wannabe'instead of looking at his performance as the all too human James Bond. The same goes for Diana Rigg, who turned in a stellar performance as a foil for Bond's general aloofness. Too bad that she, as with most of the other Bond ladies, dropped off our radars. No denigration to Sean Connery, or for any of the other actors trying to fulfill the large shoes of Fleming's character. This film hewed more closely to the plot of the original book than the majority of the other films. This is one of the 'best of Bond' and deserves another look.

This actually isn't a bad film despite what many have said about it or about Lazenby. Arch nemesis Blofeld, the ultimate villain who always gets away in the end is back to create havoc, and will stop only in exchange for immunity, or so he says. Bond has a unique relationship with Tracy, who unlike the other Bond girls, is emotionally vulnerable. Opposites attract, and Bond gets more involved than what would be comfortable. Good plot, watch out for the evil baroness too. This film, and dare i say Lazenby's potential success as 007, was only ruined by the uncharacteristic ending.
