Nobody really knows what is going on up here on these little towns, Also nobody knows about our problem with the mines closing and all the people that lost their jobs. Most of all I loved that the main character stood up for what was right, even though that meant that she had to go through alot of crap. Was this review helpful? the men do sick things. they write profanities on the walls, they leave nasty things in the womans lockers, and they try to rape her.
when i found out that that had already happened to her, i felt so sorry for her.
this is a triumphent show, fantastic directing, everything was amazing.
it was dark and sad, scary and troubling. i just wish i could have seen it on the big screen! Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 5 users found this helpful Posted: 1/26/2006A review of North Country by UrsulaUSA The movie sets in the late 80s, when Josey Aimes (Charlize Theron) returns to her hometown in Northern Minnesota after an unsuccessful marriage she then requires a good job. As a single mother with two children, she turns to the iron mines, the major source of employment in the region and had long provided employment for much of the community.
Aimes found candid work and a good pay working the mines, but she also revealed that, she was working with men who were uncomfortable working with women, and didnt mind to show them much esteem. But, as Aimes found herself the rising target of bigot, sexist jokes and disgusting conduct, she revealed that many of her female co-workers were unwilling to stand beside her because they were afraid of losing a good-paying job.
However, as a private calamity became a public war of words, Aimes became the hub of a countrywide debate, when she stabbed to file a class action sexual nuisance suit against the mine owners, which put her and her family in a position of trial ahead of her nastiest prospects.
MPAA Rating R for violence and language. Was this review helpful? The movie dragged a bit and failed to show the beauty of the remote iron range, leaving the audience to ponder why the hell any woman would stay and hack out a life among such men? The scene where they attempted to validate Woody Harellson as a hockey player was hilarious! Evidently some white people cant skate either! All in all its worth seeing!

This movie is a fictionalize story in a historically accurate setting. This is a must see film for anyone who is a serious thinker about the issues surrounding women in the work place. But do not go when you are in a dark mood and looking for a movie to pick up your spirits. This picture deals with a difficult subject in a graphic way and is at times difficult to watch. It is difficult to imagine that such men actually exist. But if Anita Hill told the truth, we have such a man sitting on the Supreme Court passing judgments on the laws that you and I live under.
If you want to see a movie that is purely superficial without any redeeming qualities, I would recommend that you rent Porkys, Bedtime for Bonzo or American Pie. If you want to see a movie that treats a serious subject in a thoughtful and provocative way and has the audacity to ask the audience to actually think, I would recommend that you see North Country. Enjoyed the whole team, thought it was well done and even though you really knew how it would turn out, you kept waiting for something to go wrong. Go see it! Was this review helpful? Sign In 6 out of 6 users found this helpful Posted: 11/7/2005A review of North Country by Lupus620 Charlize Thereon is worth watching in anything. (They used to say, Id watch her reading the phone book until someone actually did that on Sesame Street.) And Sesame Street brings to mind whats wrong with this film Its so cartoonish it seems directed at kids, though, like that great kids show, it has a lot to teach grown-ups, too.
In this depiction of harrassment of women in a mans workplace, The villains are truly villainous, the heroes heroic, the beautiful are beautiful and the ugly, ugly. Its very hard to take such black-and-white simplification seriously.
These issues have been done better, and in a more nuanced, adult, way by several other movies, notably Coal-Miners Daughter and Erin Brockovich, in which other beautiful actresses showed they could ACT in a good cause.
Nevertheless, the movie is powerful and gripping, and maybe really new to younger members of the audience (which I surely am not).
Thereon is absolutely terrific. Other members of the cast are also very good, especially Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and the fine actor (whose name I regret forgetting) who plays Therons father.
Bottom line This is a picture worth seeing and worth siding with, even if some of it seems somewhat overwrought. And Charlize Theron alone is worth the price of a ticket! Was this review helpful? The film is really well done generally but does drag a bit in places, however its worth putting up with for the sake of the movie.
I will highly recomend this film to everyone and tell you that it is on par with Silkwood and Erin Brochovich.
ITS A MUST SEE FILM!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 7 out of 10 users found this helpful Posted: 11/4/2005A review of North Country by BriskBafj its amazing, what these women endured. i felt so much anger while watching film, i wanted to throw my bottled water at the screen. script moved many character in and out, yet kept its plot together. more amazing, these events took place a short time ago. thanks for not dwelling on our MN accent. one of my favorite scenes was joseys dad taking her side at union meeting, no, maybe it was a courtroom scene and joseys support stepped forward. go see it, this film is much broader than mn. Theron did a good job and illustrated the point of the story well of sexual harrassment in the workplace. I found the film to be a little slow and drawn out. Woody harrelson plays a good role in this. In my opinion, wait till the dvd comes out. I think this is a bit of a chick flick and therefore, I found it lacking from a male perspective. Im certainly no prude but these guys were a disgrace to any species.
But what a powerful and inspiring movie! Charlize was wonderful as always as was Francis MacDonald and the end made it all worth it.
Dont miss this! Was this review helpful? The music was wonderful and true to our area. The bar scene where the gals dance together is accurate. Sissy and Frances play their roles beautifully but Charlize makes this movie so special. The did not overdo our areas accent as so many feared (Fargo) and did not portray the miners as malicious and cruel, only the few who made their work environment hell.
I laughed, cried and cheered!! Im very proud of this picture as a woman and a Ranger. Was this review helpful?
