Now don't get me wrong - I'm by no means a prude, but this movie really disturbed me. I failed to see it as the blockbuster award winner that it was touted to be. While I feel Sean Penn's character was totally justified in feeling tortured by the death of his daughter, the harsh revenge he exacted against a "friend" was terrible (and completely unjustified). And the way his wife appears to be turned on by the display of power is really gross. What a sad commentary on the human condition. Must we sensationalize every nook and cranny of man's darkest inclinations and predelictions for our "entertainment?" Was this review helpful? This could be "The like and times of Michael Moore" – The only good thing about this movie is that it ends. The bad thing is it lasted past the title. Was this review helpful? Sean Penn does his best job yet as far as I'm concerned. Laura Linny is flawless as usual, and Kevin Bacon finally gets a roll thats not over the top cheesy. The cinematography was brilliant without being obtrusive and the story was told from beiginning to the end of what one would really give a care about. Perfect job guys. This movie is a five star, probably the best one I've seen in two years. Was this review helpful? If you dont agree with it I don't care and if you do...I dont care!
This movie has everything a movie needs in order to be an instant classic. The acting was brilliant, I rarely see a film with a combination of such great actors. The directing was wondeful, every scene of this film was so brilliantly realistic! Clint Eastwood did an excellent job with this film!
If you have yet not seen this film you are missing out on such a great thing! I reccomend this film to anyone who enjoys of a GREAT drama. You don't understand what the purpose of the movie quite is. Seems to go too long and has a terrible ending. This was a really bad movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 7/30/2004A review of Mystic River by Wiggedanimal1 THis movie emotionally drained me, from the beginning to end. Same depression as Monsters Ball, it's sad to think this life happens in modern America anywhere. The amazing part is I was only one I could find who hadn't experienced it yet and it kept me constantly thinking of how mixed up people and situations can lead you to paths of destruction. Great parts to great actors although Sean Penn was a little to DeNiro. Thumbs up to everyone who I'm sure were praying at the end for a quicker resolution b-4 too late for Tim Robbins Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 7/9/2004A review of Mystic River by TranceXplant Despite all of the hype surrounding this movie , it simply isn't anything special. Yes, it has a bunch of prominent participants. And, thus, the acting is wonderful. But the plot, screenplay, and all the other elements that make a film what it is are mediocre at best. This is high-budget, extremely high-profile TV-grade melodrama accompanied by a publicity machine determined to see Sean Penn & Co. "finally" get what they should have gotten for much better work that was done a long time ago.

Speaking of which, does anyone else see Sean Penn's performance in this film as essentially an aged reprise of his role in the early 1980's film "Bad Boys"? Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/13/2004A review of Mystic River by Geary2 This movie spun a web of suspense that kept us on our seat's edge. It was pretty obvious from the beginning that the most likely suspect, Dave, was going to not be the person who actually committed the crime. I thought it a little corny that the crime that Dave did commit happened on the same night as the murder of Jimmy's daughter. Even worse was the idea that Dave's wife, Celeste, could not know the outcome of telling Jimmy she thought that her husband killed Jimmy's daughter. Finally, we are still unsure why Jimmy's daughter was actually murdered. This was still a great movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 6/15/2004A review of Mystic River by soorpanaka Who was the screenwriter? I can't believe the author of the the book approved the screenplay. The movie totally cuts out the relationship between the boys before and after the kidnapping. I think if the movie would have followed the book it would have been better. The actors did not (in my opinion) express the feelings and mode of the characters in the book,i.e., Jimmy. I saw Jimmy's character as a lot more stronger with a bit more edge. I can point out a lot of differences between the book and the movie but I just think the movie did not show the essence of the characters or the story. GREAT Book...ok movie. I expected more...next time I will watch the movie first then read the book. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
