Unfortunately there are people who have not enough humility to respect and recognise that some of us can REALLY LIKE it and UNDERSTAND it. One thing's for sure: it reaches people and no one seems to stay indifferent... You all are the living proof! Was this review helpful? Some of the scenes are so truly bizarre, (the cowboy, the man sitting in the big room by himself, the old couple), they can only be described as genius. I have no idea how Lynch could conceive these ideas (LSD??) Though outwardly the movie makes LA seem beautiful and glamorous, Lynch adds an intangible element of dread and darkness to the mix. And the cinematography was awesome. The scene where the some girl is singing for the director on the sound stage is amazing. Must see! Was this review helpful? It just takes a while to figure it out. Watch it its great. Was this review helpful? Its anyone's guess to what is really going on in this movie. As with great art, it stirs up different opinions and emotions of each viewer. Was this review helpful? It has elements of other great Lynch films, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Lost Highway, etc., but in this one those elements feel tired and overworked. Is there something more sophisticated at play here than the Hollywood dream gone rotten? Is Lynch poking fun at clichés or is he naively reveling in them? I honestly don’t know. In other films he does both brilliantly but here I felt the absence of real creepiness or the unique noir details and comedy that hallmark the others. When the twist came I wasn’t surprised, I just yawned. I felt like this movie was by a Lynch impersonator. However, there are a handful of great moments: the lip synching theater scene was wonderful. Set in the mysterious and menacing “dream world” of Los Angeles, the film circles around a trance-like landscape where the actual amalgamates with the fantastic, defying logic. Lynch's surrealist techniques--unnatural juxtapositions, irrational "realities" of dreams, circular narrative, and shifting identities--combine to form a beautiful composition, like a painting by Dali.
Although Mulholland Drive does not adhere to any logical structure, each mirage of sight and sound evokes several emotional responses within the viewer. Usually, any piece of art will speak to us on an emotional level. And we usually cannot explain why; it just does. Likewise, I cannot explain all of the reasons Mulholland Drive speaks to me; it just does.
Was this review helpful? Those dumb asses need to stop complaining because they don't have the brain power to comprehend the meaning of such an amazing film. There IS a deeper meaning to this motion picture and they would appreciate it if only they could just use the one brain cell they have left in their "no it all" heads to figure it out. Oh that’s right: I went there. Was this review helpful? Firstly because it was convenient secondly because I like lesbians and thirdly because I wanted it to make sense that much. You see ours is a complicated relationship. It began with little expectations but within a whirlwind hour of sexual tension, stunning dialogue and intellectual intrigue I found myself bewitched. Bewitched by a mask yielding troll, who, once had me in her grasp, wouldn’t let me go until she had fulfilled her own sordid little desires and perversions. Yeah metaphor was never my strong point but basically, watch it, enjoy it and eventually hate it for everything it kinda fails to deliver but still does and if you can work that one out then you might actually be able to figure the film out…. No sorry actually you won’t.Two words annoyingly compelling. Was this review helpful? Mulholland Drv. certainly had a bemusing effect on me. When watching it for the second time extra fragments fell into place, but in general it's a movie that isn't supposed to be solved. People are saying that hours of reflecting allows the deeper meaning to emerge, but unlike films that require an intense thought process to be able to come to a suitable conclusion, Mulholland Drv. is purposely mastered by Lynch so that the mystery is left ravelled in a dream-like state. This allows us to stretch the boundaries of morality and to gain a sole interpretation, based on our own imagination, as in a dream. So for those people who've succumbed to finding an elucidation for this movie, I wouldn't any lose sleep. David Lynch has presented the audience with a mystery in Mulholland Drv. and who knows whether or not it's supposed to be an unfeasible one??? Either way, the acting is certainly noteable and if you enjoy films out of the mainstream, if nothing else, Mulholland Drv. will certainly be an experience in itself! Was this review helpful? It was a mostly infuriating experience. As many people have stated, the first half was quite engrossing, then it plunged into total madness. There is nothing more disappointing than a movie that starts out coherently, then goes into mental overdrive for no reason; not even the great acting could save it at that point. I like movies that make me think, so this has nothing to do with being shallow or lazy. It has to do with a crazy director who seems to get a major kick out of having his audience spends days (or a lifetime) attempting to decipher his meaning. Worst part is, he KNOWS how to get it right (he did it with The Straight Story), so he's obviously playing a sick game with the audience, which is insulting. Or, he's simply a selfish filmmaker who doesn't care how long it takes us to get his ";idea";. But then again - there is no idea. And then again - why should he do it right, when he can make crap like this and people think its ";deep";, ";fresh"; or ";magical";. Regardless of what the critics or the Academy says - this movie is NOT art. Was this review helpful? Sign In 4 out of 4 users found this helpful Posted: 3/30/2003A review of Mulholland Dr. by HammerIntoAnvil this is not a normal mainstream release. there are no huge names. the plot is not a paint-by-numbers script. in fact, you may not get it the first time (dont be hard on yourself, it's deep). but you will be drawn in. the first time i saw it, i was so confused and intrigued, i loved it. right after seeing it, i watched it again. this time, a lot more made sense. the acting is incredible. the cinematography is beautiful. the directing is wonderful. with this, along with several previous releases, David Lynch has secured himself a seat as one of the most important and influential directors of all time. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 3/20/2003A review of Mulholland Dr. by Anonymous Definitely provocative. Unusually strange. Mysterious thoughts that cause you to ponder. Spooky at some points. These are the idiosyncratic elements of beautifully f**ked-up film. Innovative cinematography. Lynch uses creative ways and characters to explain events that appeal to the senses and even boggle the mind. This movie is unreal, yet it is as real as Hollywood. What I love about this movie is how it shows that ";innocent girls"; are not as innocent as they seem....(smirks)...This movie captures the sensuality in curiousity. What nipped me though is that there were moments in the movie that didn't make sense. It as confusing It was as if some scenes in the movie were thrown in just to creep out the viewer. This movie causes you to ponder the boundaries of consciousness and whether things are as lucid as they seem...
