Bob Hoskins was excellent as usual but I was somewhat dissapointed by Ms. Denchs performance. Very politically correct with an older woman star, questioning authority, and pushing the envelope on moral standards (downward of course). Enjoyable enough but somewhat boring. Only three couples in the theater on a Tuesday night. Was this review helpful? The characters are all lovable for their own little quirks they bring to their roles. Dame Judi as the old curmudgeon, learns to live again. Bob Hoskins learns compasion.
The war time sets are beautifuly depicted both in their sadness and hope. Things like that really happened and they kept the spirit up of the fighting men and woman.
For the previous reviewer PUZZLER they must have seen a different movie. The was nothing anti-Semetic in this film. The true terror that the jews experienced was only hinted at in this movie. Yes, Bob Hoskins was Jewish, and yes he was keeping it hidden (in some ways). In his honest revelation near the end of the movie, he lets the viewers know that he DID loose family in the fighting beause they we jewish.
Mybe PUZZLER should just stay home in their narrow minded little world. That way they wont be so quick to be offended . Was this review helpful? Dame Judi should get award recognition for her fabulous portrayal of a lady reinvigorated, even succumbing to teenage emotions. You will love this film if you love good drama and comedy and are not too prudish. Very classy in the way the stage shows are handled. You care about these characters. Great film. I heard a lady say as we exited the movie, i think this is for over 55 group. I think she was wrong. Much can be learned about this time in history thru this film. Great acting and humor by Dame Judi and Bob Hoskins and the rest of the cast. Excellent photography and sets. Dont listen to others on this one. Well worth your time. Was this review helpful? Both Judi Dench Bob Hoskins deserve an Academy Award. See this film while you can. Was this review helpful? Sign In 4 out of 13 users found this helpful Posted: 1/23/2006A review of Mrs. Henderson Presents by seer202 Very good actors cannot save this basically dull film. Even nude girls fail to bring it to life. It feels like a surface-skimmer of a plot. It never gets below the surface of the characters in any depth.-- A rich lady, Dench, buys a theater and hires an out of work director, Hoskins, to run it during ww2 in London and the story goes no deeper than just that level.--The plot is banal and sophomoric as is the trite and unconvincing set-up of conflict between Judi Dench, thre rich eccentric and Bob Hoskins, the stuffy director. The explanation for the nudity, delivered in a silly scene by Judi Densh, is that she wants young boys to see nude women before they are killed (the boys, not the women) in the war so they wont have to resort only to dirty pictures, is beyond bizarre.--This film is a waste of two first-rate actors. The producers ought to find better scripts next go around. As for Densh and Hopkins, they ought to have known better. Was this review helpful? I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the show. The casting was perfect. The sets were marvelous. The acting was superb. The chemistry between Judith Dench and Bob Hoskins was palpable and just fun to watch. Kelly Reilly, Will Young, Christopher Guest, Thelma Barlow and the remainder of the cast brought to life a very poignant story of a slice of life in WWII London and the spirit of the people of the West End theater district. All of the storytelling, dancing, singing and script was masterfully choreographed and crafted by the collaboration of Director Stephen Frears and Writer Martin Sherman to produce an extremely entertaining movie well worth a few hours of your time and worthy of all the acclaim Im sure it will receive. Dont miss it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 33 out of 40 users found this helpful Posted: 12/6/2005A review of Mrs. Henderson Presents by Charles373 It offers a feel-good experience, but without the heavy dose of schmaltz that often accompanies such a production. This movie is an absolute delight from start to finish with a bigscreen feature executed with a cookie-cutter small-screen sensibility, this often charming despite an untextured fact-based period piece is buoyed along by the redoubtable Judi Dench.
