Posted: 7/18/2009A review of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium by PositivePatti
This movie was recommended to me by a Hospice counselor. It was very helpful to me in my grieving process, and I believe that others who have lost a loved one can gain greatly from the symbolism. The story line (toy shop) was almost incidental, but the lessons on death and dieing are priceless. Children can see the movie, too, but come away with an entirely different feeling and story than the one I experienced. Although I cried through some of the movie, it was not a sad cry, but a cleansing cry. I HIGHLY recommend this movie!!

Moralistic Fantasy set in the Modern Day. Between the towering office buildings of a big City lies a small, rustic shop that frames the last bastion of Magic and Wonder run by a wiezened little Gnome named Magorium who specializes in the mystique of Playtime. As his longtime Manager, Molly Mahoney keeps all functioning smoothly while trying to work through minor turmoil that invades her personal life. But Magorium has a Master Plan designed to bring Molly a great Epiphany about her own destiny and taking a young Accountant and a lonely young boy in unwitting tow. Perhaps trying to be likened to "The Old Curiosity Shop" this film has the potential to be a nice Fairy Tale but Zach Helm relies too much on gimmickry to try and sell his point. For some reason, he also opts to have Kermit The Frog in a cameo but features no other Fantasy Characters in like mode and the result is a Muppet who looks slightly out of place. The writing is uneven at best and becomes predictable to the point of absurd rather leaving the Actors out in the cold. Hoffman takes on an "Ed Wynn" persona which may have served better if he was more of a featured catalyst. Although I love Natalie Portman, I venture to say that anyone could have been placed in this role and I don't even know why the Eric Applebaum character was needed. The only character having any real believability is Jason Bateman's accountant who can't even be relied on as a Love Interest for Portman's character. To be fair, the ending works the best out of all scenes, but the setup is so belabored and trite that you almost don't care. This may be good fare for young Children but not much else.

I knew just after 20 minutes that this movie was going to be bad. I looked around and already my husband, my teenage son, and my toddler were asleep. Just myself and my youngest son who is 6 were barely hanging in there. I love Dustin Hoffman and wanted to see this film with great anticipation, I was hurtfully let down. I could not attach to any character in this movie. And the ending was simply empty. Very, very disappointing. I actually left wishing I could get my money back.

This movie was colorful, but that's about it. It lacked any plot, whatsoever! Even Dustin Hoffman's adorable lisp could not save it. I left disappointed. I guess Hollywood decided to make something depressing for the children, too.

My mother and I liked this movie, but my 4 year old granddaughter was bored through most of it. It is rated G and the ads for it were a bit misleading. I thought there would be more of the movie taking place in the toy store, but there wasn't much of that; and at the end, it was all black, gray and dead looking. The scenes in the hospital room, park, etc. had her asking "is it over and can we go now?" over and over again. And I had to bribe her to stay to the end. Not for smaller children and I wish I had known that before taking her.

Many of you complain it wasn't good or you couldn't understand it. To understand this movie you have to be LITERATE, somewhat philosphical, and look beyond what's presented. This movie was extremely intelligent. It used words far past the average person's vocabulary. I don't know why all of you say this movie is so bad, when it is merely, ORIGINAL, intelligent, witty, and one of the only children's movie out there that doesn't not use violence or pain as humor.

This movie was pretty good, however, I saw Enchanted this weekend too, and I would pay to see it again. I could've waited for this one to be released for rental. This movie has a good message and is entertaining though. If your trying to decide which film to take the family to, Enchanted wins, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

I must say that I am in wow with this movie. I am not a big fan of Jason or Natalie, but my respect grew today! Dustin is great! I liked this film because for one it brings out the kid in me, I'm 37 and also the things said from Dustin to Natalie really make alot of sense and it makes you feel like you can be who you want to be no matter what you think or what people say to you. I see alot of people bashing the movie, we all have our opinions but go see it and it will get to the kid or the emotional side in you. Dustin is 70, we have the same Birthdate and another great movie. Believe in yourself, is what I got from it and that little extra faith that I need right now.

Well this movie was ok. I took my wife and son. My son fell asleep an dmy wife kind of liked it. The ending really ($@&ed. But the movie was cute. You have to like all of the talk in riddles by dustin Hoffman. There was hardly any character development and the kid was very weird. I think we should have seen Enchanted instead.

Fifteen of our family ranging in age from 7 to 70 went to see this for a holiday treat and we were ALL disappointed. It was too abstract, even for the adults and too slow and philosophical for the kids. I usually like Dustin Hoffman but his character's impending death was too protracted and overwhelmed any magic that may have been intended to emerge in the story.

FORGET THE CRITICS!, if it isn't gore or filth they pan it, at last a movie we all felt comfortable watching and had fun as well. As an adult, Mr. M got a bit over the top for us, but so what....

I took my 5 year old daughter to this movie and we both loved it. Natalie Portman was by far the best. I feel as though she was the main character in the movie, with both Jason Bateman and Dustin Hoffman as supporting characters. Great story line that kept your imagination up and kept you on the edge of your seat wondering what is next. My daughter loved it and she has a shorter attention span than I. Would recommened to anyone that wants to watch a good family wholesome move.

I took my 6 and 8 year old kids to see this not really knowing exactly what it was about. I myself was touched and brought to a teary eyed spot. I loved most of the dialog that at times reached over the heads of the simpleness of children and most adults but still left a strong message of dealing with death in a positive light and becoming ourselves what we sometimes don't always have the ability to see. The only reason I didn't give this a five star was because of the ending seemingly to turn you towards a more dramatic ending but kind of fizzled out. A great family movie where I not once questioned the content but still had a mature enough value to make even grown people think about mortality and legacies left.
