This a great epic of a movie--done in the best sense of old-fashioned movie making. There are beautifully framed sweeping shots of the vastness and complexity of the Mongolian landscape. You come to understand the difficulty of surviving there and the necessity of an allegiance to a clan to ensure that survival. Life at that time was truly survival of the fittest. The movie opens with the scene of a 9 year old boy being led on a journey to select his future bride. That boy will eventually grow into the man known as Genghis Khan although his true identity is not announced until the end of the movie. We are taken on a journey with him through the many trials and tribulations of his life as he grows into manhood. The battle scenes were too bloody for my taste but no doubt realistic. The mysticism present in their culture is represented in several scenes.Throughout the movie is the thread of the bond of the love he has with his wife Borte. One is led to understand that they are soulmates and she in her own quiet way is his match. She is as necessary to his survival as he was to the Mongol Empire. I loved this movie. It was very well done. I hope we see more from this very talented Russian director.

Great flick. It took me away. You really see the highs and lows of what Genghis Khan went through. Beautifully shot, good script, and acting. It only covers his rise to the top but what a story! It makes you realize that a lot of people that have done great things in their lives, have suffered a lot first. A little bloody but needed for the battle scenes.
