Will she pick money, fame or love? That is the question and Miss Pettigrew helps the spacey Miss Grump find the answer. A cute, sillly movie that is most enjoyable.

I had written a stellar review of this movie and then went back and read the critics comments.... I think, the aforementioned crack is at hand. They called it "slow to start" - which is WEIRD because it's not - at all. In fact, there's a very fast pace maybe 5 minutes after the credits finish - so, I'm guessing that according to the critics - being too "slow" for 5 minutes to get a sense of the character is bad... I'm not even sure what they meant by slow because I found it interesting and even funny in the first few minutes but it's possible that they were distracted by free popcorn and coke - I'm not sure. Also, to be fair - if you do not like classic movies - you probably won't like this movie. The acting style of Amy Adams, is very reminiscent of early Hollywood actresses, which maybe construed as annoying by those who aren't too much into classic actresses like Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn or Irene Dunn. I believe at the end of the critics review he says something about "mustering up enough delight" or something, as if by some act of God came together and suddenly made him care about the characters - that may be true for him but I found it pretty amazing right away. No, nothing blows up and there's no sex. You don't see boobs and there's very little cursing. In that respect, there's no "Hollywood thrills" but the dialog is compelling, the storyline is quite relaxed. You are eager to know what happens to the characters but you enjoy the trip along the path as well. I really think that this movie will appeal to a good amount of people (especially those who seek out Indie flicks) and I hope that every tells their friends and take a giant group of people to the theatre because I want more movies like this in the future. Just don't do crack before you go.

This is a FABULOUS, light-hearted and yet meaningful comdedy that lacks Hollywood schmaltz or melodrama. Frances McDorman is, as always brilliant in her portrayal of Guinevere Pettigrew- her English accent is flawless! My husband and I intensely dislike sappy, cheesy and predictable movies- and he especially dislikes the 'chick-flick' genre, but we were both very satisfied that we had scored a winner. Because we arrived just as the lights dimmed, the movie theatre was packed and we had to sit apart. I kept glancing over at him to see if he was grimacing or pulling faces and I saw to my relief sheer delight written all over it. Phew! I could relax then and just %&*^ up bright, happy entertainment. The recreation of pre-war glamor and decadence was captured to a tee making this visual eye candy. The plot line was simple and easy to follow- ah....enough! Just go see it, you'll love it I'm sure!

An exquisitely charming tale of a hapless and dull creature (Frances McDormand played down most effectively) who once again finds herself in need of a governess position in pre-war England. Necessity breeds daring as she takes a leap of courage and finds herself in the home of a would-be employer, a deliciously ambitious tartlet or did I mean starlet, well never mind because you know what I mean (played by the specialist of this kind of lightheaded beauty, Amy Adams). It's only one day that they spend together, but what a day - makeover, juggling boyfriends, plotting to win a juicy role and willing to do anything, true love, and the ex-boyfriend. I loved this film, it is light, charming, the decor of 1930's is utterly exquisite, the music just great and it made for a great afternoon of entertainment. As my friend emailed me just the other day, she wants to be the redhead, and I'll be Pettigrew - I would love to do that!
