PAIR THIS WITH "ROAD TO PERDITION", AND YOU GOT AN UNBELIEVABLY ENJOYABLE NIGHT!<br>THE BEST FILM, IN MY OPINION, FROM THE COEN BROTHERS!

Those who love the Coens' work are duty-bound to see this film, which may well be their best. Chock full of memorable lines and wonderful performances, the whole picture is held together by beautiful cinematography and the steady presence of Gabriel Byrne as the clever but conflicted Tom Regan. Not a single scene is wasted time, although three stand out: John Turturro's star-making plea in the woods, the extended attempt on the life of Albert Finney's mob boss Leo, and rival boss John Polito's reaction when convinced of an underling's deception. Bravura filmmaking at its best, this is my personal favorite from the Coens AND the early 90s.

The best of the Coen Brothers' films, it is also the most overlooked. This stylish gangster film noir features rich dialogue and plot to go with the flashy 20's scenery and the vibrant characters. Gabriel Byrne is outstanding as Tom Regan, the young Irish underboss whose loyalties are strong-but-flawed. He would give his life for his boss Leo (a superb Albert Finney, cast at the last minute after Trey Wilson's sudden death), but he can't stop himself from taking up with Leo's girl Verna (Marcia Gay Harden in a fine turn). John Turturro is terrific as the weasly Bernie Birnbaum, and Jon Polito and J.E. Freeman give strong performances as rival Boss Johnny Caspar and his chilling enforcer Eddie Dane.
