The movie was compelling and the acting superb! How could the movie have too many gay sex scenes if the main character was gay? Controversial? Sure, but in this day and age it shouldn't be so! Hollywood shouldn't be just about entertainment, but about challenging our social and historic demons as well!
Let's just admit that some of us continue to be prejudiced and close-minded... Was this review helpful? It is a compelling story that shows the reality of the need for equal rights for ALL people. The fact that Harvey Milk had the courage to continue to fight for his cause after he received numerous death threats is a testimony to the core of truth. ALL people need equal rights, there is no room for hatred in this country. If we could all have the sensitivity and passion of Harvey Milk this country would truly be heaven on earth.
Watch the movie, its worth whatever you will have to pay to see it. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 2/6/2009A review of Milk by armadillo260 Disgusting! Makes me wanna throw up! Typical Hollywood. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful The screenplay, cinematography, and above all the acting, were first-rate and definitely Oscar-worthy. Sean Penn gives the performance of his life as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician ever elected to office in American history. The supporting cast led by James Franco, Diego Luna, Emile Hirsch and especially Josh Brolin (who plays Milk's assassin, fellow San Francisco Councilman Dan White) also excels. However, the film's gaping flaw (which I found very disturbing) is that all of the heterosexual characters are portrayed as intolerant, verbally and/or physically violent homophobes. The film's failure to acknowledge the fact that the vast majority of heterosexual Americans do not vehemently despise homosexuals serves only to detract from the underlying message of the film. Walked out! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Sean Penn deserves the nomination for best actor. He does a wonderful job as Harvey Milk. (if you have not seen the documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk," well then you SHOULD! A great documentary. Anyway, i wish they had included a little more of the social setting and the "times," and a little less of the political environment. But that was what Harvey's life was: the quest for political and thus social change. I liked the film, and I would recommend it to anyone. James Franco does such a wonderful job. It is so easy to fall for his eyes, and to believe that he loves Harvey...great job, good film, go see it. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Sean Penn is excellent... the supporting actors all are great. And more important, while it shows how far we've come in 30 years, it also makes it very clear that in many ways, we're still fighting the same battles. I hope this film gets a wide range of viewers; everyone should be able to relate to this incredible story. It's fascinating as moviemaking, as history, and as a reflection of today. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful I watched the movie twice already. I just liked it.The acting of everybody, especially from Sean Penn was amazing. A beautiful and moving film!!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 11/28/2008A review of Milk by BuBuOfarrell I saw the movie at Castro theatre on the 27th of November, exactly 30 years after the tragedy happened. I am not a critic so I will make it simple.
I was glad to learn a piece of the American History, to see the carefully placed real footage of the event in the movie.
Sean Penn was simply amazing in this movie. How can a person play a role of Harvey Milk from inside? It is not a superficial impersonation but it is a much deeper emotional impersonation.
I have to thank a director Gus Van Sant for creating an exquisite movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-15 of 15 Per Page | ||
