I am one of the many people who read the book and then saw the movie and I have to say that although the book provides some background information for the movie, the movie itself stands on its own. I enjoyed this movie for the fact that love isn't portrayed as something easily obtained. Sayuri had to fight for what she wanted and she had to endure what came at her. This plays so true and I found that this movie far goes beyond those simple love stories where love is easily found.

Over the holidays I went to go see this with my girlfriends and I didnt think I would like it that much. But it was just an amazing plot, wonderful actors, showed you and taught you something about their culture. Seeing how it was in Japan post war and how they had it makes you thankful. And what those ladies did was just degrading to theirselves but they had to get that money and I can respect that. Well if you like movies that teach you something and isnt just about prostitutes or some man with a chainsaw then go see this. Wonderful movie wont be disappointed..oh and keep an open mind you never know..some bad reviews may keep you from seeing a movie that you can deeply relate to.

This movie led me to beleive that even without dialog it would have been just as successful. The movie is shot with the eye of an artist, showing the bold colors that makes up the historical mysticism of Japan, and the dreaded colors that surrounded that country during the world war. Anyone seeking to look into the cultural life of Japan should sit back and notice the beauty that is Japan. The movie is wonderfully cast, and to match any Cinderella story from the West, the ending provides a tantilizing enrichment to the endearing qualities of hope.

I did not read the book but I enjoyed the movie. I understand how many women live this type of life. Geisha or not. At the same time Im thinking how sad it is to have to be in a position to be exploited by men. Everyday the media glorifies women that allow men to objectify them and use sex to get what they want. A geisha- is a prostitute even if she is educated and has special talents. Being a prostitute doesnt mean you are less than a person, but its degrading, and some young girls watching this movie might get the wrong impression that being a geisha is something to imitate. Entertainment wise, the movie was very well executed.

I read the book first and loved it. Some months later I watched the movie and thought it was ok. The book, like any other book, is very detailed. If you dont read the book first, you will get lost here and there throughout the movie, which is why I gave this movie only 4 stars, though watching the movie does keep you in your seat. I wish they had done a Part I, Part II, etc. for the movie, sort of like with Kill Bill, so that all the parts of the book were in the movie but just in different volumes. Overall, I liked it.

I felt like I have seen e good movie but not a great one. Very superficial in the treatment of the topic. Visually is a grEat work, but when it comes to the story, the acting... I felt a lacking. Wait to see it at home.

I read the book before seeing the movie and I must say after reading the book it was one of best books Ive read. So naturally I couldnt wait to see the movie. However I was quite disappointed with the movie compared to the book. The acting, costumes, and cinematography was all great but the events and some of the characters in the story are changed so drastically it makes the movie unenjoyable. The book overflows with detail and the struggles that Sayuri and the other characters went through and so much of it was just ignored in the movie. Also I felt like the movie made a lot of the issues the characters faced seem very superficial and shallow. I know the story had to be cut down for time but it seemed to me like not much effort was made to include more key moments and at least try to make the movie more like the book. Instead the movie came across as pretty much your typical Hollywood love story and nothing more. Another thing that bothered me is that the movie seemed to carry on the idea that Geisha are just expensive prostitutes rather than entertainers. So overall if your really into Japanese culture or Geisha and are thinking about seeing this movie I recommend reading the book first because there is so much you miss out on by just watching the movie.

Memoirs of a Geisha is the story of a little girl sold by her father into a life of organized prostitution. She wants to escape this life until she meets and becomes infatuated with an older (and wealthy) man who frequents brothels, and so she determines to become what he desires in order to attract his attention, i.e. a desirable prostitute. Her virginity is sold, but not for the highest bidder as it turns out. Stated that way the story seems harsh and squalid, but the film is actually very engaging and romantic (as well as romaticized, of course), and beautifully filmed as well. Despite the subject matter there is no gratuitous sexual content, and the film succeeds because it focuses on how the heroine adapts and surivives with elegance the visitudes that life throws her way (including a world war).

The story has no point other than being told.In a year of actually superb films like the Constant Gardener this is a culturally superficial attempt to subvert the senses into believing that art and effective marketing are indistinct. Not true.

Posted: 2/2/2006A review of Memoirs of a Geisha by alenamaria
Do not loose your time watching this movie as I did. Yes, subject is so interesting - mysterious world of geishas... But after seeing this movie you know less about that world than before - since you were misleaded into empty a la Hollywood story about unreal world and unreal people. Shame that under movie-making are signed such a good names...but I guess that is happening not the first (and not last) time. I cannot understand why it is said to be based on the book story, movie has with the book common just a title. What might be not bad. The bad is that moviemakers used only the title to attract public and twisted the story in the way which is probably supposed to be exciting and attractive even more. At the end any possible connection with real geishas is lost and what remain is shallow Hollywood style story about women who are just little bit higher than street working girls. Such a pity. Alena

I saw this movie with my very skeptical husband. Neither of us had read the book, but we both thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Sure, like every movie, there are some hollywood moments, but overall, the movie was extremely entertaining. For such an unknown subject as the Geisha lifestyle, I can understand it being simplified for everyone in the audience. The costumes were gorgeous and the movie literally pulls you in to its setting. A definate must see!
