Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, star in Match Point it tells the story of a tennis pro named Chris who meets a wealthy upper-class man, Tom, and marries his sister, Chloe. But soon Chris finds that hes impossibly drawn to Toms American ex-fiancée, Nola, which puts his marriage, friendship and financial standing at risk. Match point was written and directed by Woody Allen who in his life is not the greatest person but he makes good movies. Match point is one of his resent film he has also directed Melinda and Melinda. A lot of people say that they did not see the movie because it was directed by Woody Allen but he had made a great movie. Match Point is a thriller and a thriller that works. It is not a love and Affair movie. Scarlett Johansson, I think gives her strongest performance and her best performance. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, are the only people in this movie who I have not heard of these actors they have been in more than one movie but this is the movie that will make there career. This movie takes place in London so a lot of what they say is different from the way we are used to talking. For example Mommy becomes mummy and a cell phone is a Mobile and a apartment is a flat. I think that it is great that they use those words to make it more real. Match Point has a great twist to one that you will not except. I think that Scarlett Johansson, should have gotten a Ocar nomination for her role in Match Point. Match Point is a Hard - Edge thriller with wonderful performances and a wonderful direction. Match point is a Triumph!

Match point is a wonderful and eloquently done movie. While its themes of love, sex, betrayal and murder are nothing new to movie making, Mr. Allen manages to deliver this otherwise rehatched plot with sincerity, originality and a maticulous attention to detail, giving us in the end a cool movie going experience. I like the setting of the movie, it being set in upper class london adds to the movies originality. The characters are all well developed and the actors all do a god job, even in the smallest of roles. The characters being as intellectual and cultured as they are, manage to entertain us, even in the mere conversations that they have in the slower portions of the movie. Notable are Jonathan Rhyes Myers, whose handsome, but slightly dark looks fit perfect into his characters persona, and Scarlett Johanson. Johanson fits the gorgeous, seductive vixen role perfectly, but much props to the writers for going beyond that and also showing her character as a real induvidual, with human emotions, hopes and frustrations. I was thoroughly entertained by this movie and found the whole piece on luck to be perfectly tied in and a real display of the writers and directors creativity.

It was absolutely a so-so movie, but with scarlett inside, it was a horrible movie. We cannot see what was so great about her either in lost in translation. Amy smart acts much better than Scarlett does!

i must preface my review by stating that i am a huge woody allen fan, own most of his movies, think he is a brilliant comedic writer-actor, and desperately wanted to like this movie. i couldnt believe how a) disappointing this movie was, b) how obviously deriviative of Crimes and Misdemeanors it is, and c) that other reviewers here could have liked this. did they actually see this movie? were there senses numbed by oxygen deprivation caused by a pesky jujubee stuck in their windpipe during the opening credits? it boggles the mind some call this a good movie. (beware - gratuitious plot-divulging criticism ahead) the acting is tragic (not in a good way, lilke shakespeare, but in a bad way, like painful to watch.) i know that london can be an overcast and drab place sometimes (i know, i lived there for a while) but do most of the actors have to suffer from seasonal-deficit-disorder dreariness. the plot is terribly contrived and ridiculously unnatural in places. a) chris (social climbing tennis guy) starts laying on bad pickup lines on nola (petulant actress wanna be) literally seconds after meeting her, and her fiancee is right outside the room. b) nola conveniently forgets to write about her pregnancy in her diary. c) the police dont realize in the autopsy that nola was pregnant, wonder who the father is, blood test and find out that chris is the father, and sorta figure out that would be a good murder motive. d) the unlucky dead neighbors ring is found on a dead local neer-do-well instead of a nearby pawnshop, throwing the police off chris tail. e) chris rich and suspicious wife cant figure out that her husband is having a torrid affair with the lusty nola. rich dad couldnt hire MI5 to follow the bum? anyway, you get the point. theres a certain amount of suspension of disbelief during the movie that you instantly feel regret about afterwards when you realize what a moron you were to believe any of it. and pay 8 to see.

Match Point was a real surprise. A story that is a bit off. Very heavy on the drama and the intigue. The cast was terrific. This story of temptation, infideity, guilt, greed and fear gone awry is fascinating. The fates of the characters are perfectly summed up by the opening tennis ball scene. The main character Rhys is an unwitting social climber. Scarlett is undeniably attractive and adorable as the conflicted other-woman, and as one of the characters says near the end - of course we hardly blame him. The other parts are well cast. The alchy mom the best, being the typical overbearing parent to the point of hilarity. At first I thought this movie might be slow, but the metaphors used were intriguing and I was quickly drawn in. 2 hous flew by.

There are so many reasons to see this film. The sets of English Upper class digs were like Da Hooch paintings and a love making scene the begining of the film reminded me of Wyeth. There was an incidental sceene of the Covent Garden Stage that was shot in color but so close to gray scale to contrast the real life drama that was unfolding that I will take to my grave. This film is outstanding. The use of music - the lamentable arias are the backdrop of this verismo-like drama. The casting was incredible. The story was compelling - this is a writer-director who brought his ace game and bageled the audience. The film analogy in tennis terms is so on, and the camera angles were intriging. The dialougue was tight-- he did something to the metre--I was tempted to close my eyes and tap out the lines but the visuals were so hypnotic. I missed the wise-cracking Allen character that you see in most of his films but the absence here was a plus. There is a ghost scene that looked to close to MacBeth but Allen uses a light OHenry touch not once but twice at the end of the film. Bravo!

In my opinion Woody Allen is a really good writter and thats why the film couldnt be bad. When the film starts you think that maybe its another boring film. Its a poor man who is married to a rich woman and he suddenly becomes a serial killer because he didnt want to lose his rich wife. The casting is brilliant, especially Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. The plot was excellent and some shots like the one with the ring where brilliant, at the end there was a lot of suspence especially in the police station scene. But whatever you say it was a really good movie.!.!

Im ok with Woody Allen movies. I liked the plot and the scenery and the music and even the slowness was working for me. I loved the tennis ball metaphor. However, Scarlett was horrible. She is a terrible actor in this. How could other people and critics not comment on this blaringly obvious fact. Everyone I was with came to the same notion individually. Is she that famous that someone cant call it like it is? The emperor has no clothes! Sure, she looked great, but she was horrible! Ive read that Woody doesnt direct very much... but kind of lets the actors do their own thing. Well Scarlett obviously needs the help! Movie - 3 stars Acting by Scarlett - 1 star (or zero)

Match Point was not what I expected. With the one trailer I caught, and the title, I expected some tennis-like, back-and-forth action. But there was none! A cheating, adulterous husband-turned killer and his adoring, clueless wife are the players- but, I never saw any fair play. He cheats, she doesnt. He Kills, she doesnt even raise a hand. Hes playing a game and shes not even on the same field. I have to admit, though, I was pulled in so much that I disliked my husband for a few minutes after the movie just for belonging to the male species. I came away feeling empty, sad, and angry. But, Ive got to give it to a director who can envoke all those emotions... Overall, not worth seeing or renting.

Not sure why this movie was made. Nothing to it, boring, long and just not anywhere. Woody, maybe its time to retire and enjoy your life with your young wife and family. Yawn.

Before you see this movie find out what youre personality is!! Are you Type A or B or many others as well. Be sure to see this movie when (A) You are in a good mood. (B) You have no expectations and dont know to much about this film (C) You love slow dramatic type films with a lot of dialogue. If this is not you, DO NOT SEE IT. I on the other hand absolutely loved this movie. Aside from being filmed in beaUtiful London England it gives you a inside look at the educated upper class. Which I unfortunately am not. ). If you decide to see this film, listen immediately to the opening dialogue. The message is beyond the plot! SIMPLY BRILLIANT

Posted: 1/29/2006A review of Match Point by FalconBoy9
The acting in this movie was terrific. Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers have never looked and acted this great. This movie will have you guessing from the very beginning. The director did a great job in his creation of the mood of this movie. This movie is modern but it felt like one of those old great movies that all movies want to be compared to. The shock value of this movie continues to grow and grow throughout the movie because of the various things that happen. This movie really showcased the abilities of a person who wants things to be perfect and the ones around them who are clueless. This movie was released in limited release and should be placed in wide release because this movie is terrific. The flow on this movie has caused me to see it 3 times since it arrived in my city. I recommend that everyone see this movie.

It is difficult to remember the last time I have been this disappointed in a film. What year did Ishtar come out? I found this movie to be completely flat and lifeless. Woody Allen usually does a much better job of making boring stories about every day life more interesting. Maybe he just cant do it outside of New York. The supposedly suprisingly ironic twist at the end of the film is interesting for a few minutes at best. My greatest issue with this film however has to do with the posted review and causes me to wonder if the reviewer actually saw the film or simply the movie poster. The reviewer billed the movie as a romantic comedy. The only thing only mildly amusing about this film was that thanks to a totally inept description I was !ered into paying money to see it. Stay away from this film at all costs. You will thank me!

This is a restatement of Crimes and Misdameanors, an earlier Woody Allen film. Same basic plot, same conclusion the murderer goes uncaught. Id guess Woody had plot ideas left over from the original version so he decided to use the left overs for another film, this one, so minor details of Crimes are changed, but not the main plot.--The original is the better film. The acting in this one is good, the London settings good, but one wonders why the switch to London from New York? It isnt necessary to the plot to be in London.--Movie starts out slow and draggy and maintains a forced suspense but one wonders if he intended this version to be a comedy or not. Some of the happenings are ridiclous enough for it to be a comedy. This movie is not one of his best in spite of the good hype this film has been getting from reviewers. Still it does no harm to see it either. It seems however that Woody is either getting lazy or forgetful of his past work.
