Seems to show the results of raising a family that has been indulged to much and who has an incredible amount of idle time on their hands. Just a regrettable 93 minutes of my time wasted. I simply can't recall the last time Nicole Kidman made a decent movie, JJL was her typical stupid, mumbling depressing self, and Jack Black was stupid especially when he cried, speaking of crying... I have never seen a movie that every creature cried at some point. Maybe if they drank less and stopped doping up and did something useful they wouldn't have been such a bunch of whiney cry babies. I guess the lesson of the movie is drink less alcohol, and don't take RX drugs, of steal RX drugs from your family. Pitiful movie. Was this review helpful? I didn't think, from the previews, that it was going to be so dark. I liked the soundrack (when is the last time anyone used a song from THE GREAT ROCK BAND EVER, "X"?) The mood of the film is slight creepy, and everyone is a bit off-center. I absolutely loved the ending. But I also loved a similar type of ending in "No Country for Old Men", in which the films just seem to simply stop, but both of these films stop in just the right places. Was this review helpful? Everyone gave a great performace. Too bad the writting and editing were horrible. The editing reminded me of amaturish work by students. The opening scene cut back and forth so many times, I was dizzy. Much of the dialog felt like it was done just for shock value, adding nothing to the story. Was this review helpful? Boring draging story if any weird yuk!!!! film.
The kids where the best if I had to chose at least there lines made you laugh and feel sorry for them playing in this stupid movie. Thumbs down.
The movie with these great actors in the film you would think there would be a better story line it was all over the place.

Yes, it is dark and cynical with its plot but it also has elements of comedy. I love the fact that Jack Black, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Flora Cross are in the cast. It give them variety in roles and makes them better actors! My friends and I are such great fans of Noah Baumbach, the director. His last film, The Squid and The Whale was really good. If you liked Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, then you’ll definitely enjoy this dark comedy-drama. This movie in a way reminds me of my family (only SOME parts) and to see Nicole as a dysfunctional lunatic, made me really really enjoy this movie!
