Don't get me wrong the penguins are cute but it was just plain boring. It was kinda sad to like whena penguin would die. I would not recomend this movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 3/31/2007A review of March of the Penguins by Anonymous About 50 years ago Walt Disney Presents showed a wonderful story on the Emperor Penguins. Given this fact, and that these beautiful, endearing, wonderful and gentle creatures and their survival struggles would again be the subject matter for a film, I was enthralled when I heard about the release of the movie The March of the Penguins. But unlike the reviews given to this movie, my reaction was sadness and disappointment.
The only element this movie had over the Walt Disney Presents version, purely and simply, is that it was filmed in color. It had lousy computer-animation that should have been deleted and a poor narrative script. In fact The March of the Penguins should have been a 60 min National Geographic Special rather than in its over extension by 20 minutes version as a supposed movie. The stunning photography was unfortunately dulled by the poor and useless computer-animation.
Details about the penguin were incomplete. For example they discussed the temperature, distance from the water, how long a penguin could dive and stay under water but no mention was made about such relevant facts as
(1) the population size (150,000 - 200,000 breeding pairs)
(2) their size (Adults average 1.3 m (4 ft) in length and weigh between 20
and 45 kg (44 to 99 lb).
(3) life span
(4) how to differentiate between the male and female of the species
(5) whether there is a Head penguin
(6) who their predators are other than seals (Antarctic giant petrels, orca,
skua, and sharks), and
(7) a description of the courting process.
Sadly like some of the poor chicks eggs that do not survive, this movie was not all it was cracked up to be. Was this review helpful? Luc Jacquet and his crew fantastically captured the mating rituals of Emperor penguins and the hardships they face throughout that time. From the males 75 mile march to meet up with and mate the females, to the females 75 mile march back to the ocean for food and the males long hard winter and time trying to keep the egg warm, to the birth of the chick, to reunion of the parents, and the final separation of the family, March Of The Penguins truly captures the hardships that these beautiful creatures have to go through just to create new life. I mean, why penguins? I dont know. But whatever motive they had, the producers of this film make you fall in love with these cute yet resilient creatures. The film amazingly illlustrates both the scientific element and the emotional characteristics of this animal species on both a day to day and a long term basis, the joys, the stuggles, the silly moments and the serious. Shots of the landscape against the sky give one the feeling of floating through space, even though we are on ground level. Through a telling narration and cinematography one leaves finding these tiny but numerous creatures as having been given the arduous yet hororable role of keepers of this austere yet beautiful corner of our planet. What a great film! Parents, put the fantasy DVDs aside, this reality is all you need to fill your kids and yourselves with a sense of wonder! Was this review helpful? What the emperor penguins must endure is unfathomable to most everyone, yet they pull out the strenght and courage year after year on the harshest place on earth. The scenery is exquisite, almost unimaginable and the soundtrack is haunting. Dont miss this movie! Im already planning a trip to Antarctica in 2007-2008! Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 1/31/2006A review of March of the Penguins by 34brim March of the Penguins is without a doubt one of the best documentaries ever produced! As a professional photographer, I have been to Antarctica, and am also a resident of Minnesota, so I can appreciate the harsh conditions under which this film was made. The story was superb along with outstanding cinematography. It was refreshing to see a film that is so educational and so well suited to family viewing. There are many kinds of penguins, some of which are a warm water variety who never venture into Antarctic waters, but this is a whole different aspect that could be told in another fascinating documentary about these likeable creatures. It all gets real simple real fast as penguins do what they have to do to propogate the species. All the penguins are super cute and the fatalities are far and few between ,,,, a must see for families of all ages. Morgan Freemans warm voice makes you feel as safe and warm in your home as you watch this as a penguin baby tucked away in its , Fathers flap. Was this review helpful? Youre one of those teenyboppers for who it isnt a good movie unless HIlary duffs in it or it doesnt have some pointless subject! Honestly! You know what? Dont try watching it again. Ever. Im 13 years old and I usually dont like documentaries (im more of a romantic-comedy type of person). I found it a really nice movie and at then end I was like What, thats it? Was this review helpful? A bit too long for some children but for those old enough and with concentrating powers, a treat for the eyes and spirit. Was this review helpful? This documentary was inspirational. A true lesson in perseverance, and I have developed a deep respect for emperor penguins. Ive always loved penguins, but I had no idea they lived like this. So many of the reviews I read drove me to place an opinion of my own regarding this precious jewel. Feelings were ignited in me for the first time in months, maybe years. I was engaged, educated, and amazed. I was saddened, yet encouraged, and I felt proud to be part of our great Earth once again. And ... with filmakers such as Luc Jacquet, I have a renewed sense of hope. This inspirational film is a must-see for all!
My only regret? That I was not a part of his esteemed film crew, even if it was delivering blankets and hot chocolate! Was this review helpful? Why can't we humans have such determination in caring for our own children. The parents of today could learn a lot from this beautiful film. It is definitely one I would like to own, but watching on t.v. could not compare to seeing it on the big screen, it is magnificent. I would like to see a documentary on the people who filmed it and what they must have gone through to do so. Was this review helpful?
