I had come to the theater hoping for the best and even expecting it. I was fascinated to see how this celebrated director would deal with one of the most complex and damming aspects of cultural life in the United States -- the question of race. Instead I was treated to two hours of tedium filled with every vulgar sterotype one could imagine. There is the obligatory rape of a white woman scene. There was the alice-in-wonderland liberal who learns a patently racist lesson -- that blacks in America were better off as slaves. There was the odd and uneffective use of the word nigga -- Von Trier contemplates the various roles of cheaten niggas, stupid niggas tricky niggas, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum. I guess the director thought that he would try to shock people. But this was too stupid an effort to have that kind of effect. The Dogville approach to the film becomes old quickly. It is poorly lit and poorly shot even for a dogma film. It was poorly acted -- serious black actors all turned down the script. Poor Danny Glover who cant seem to get work these days, was the only one to take it up. But worst of all, it was predictable. I knew that the people of Manderlay would want the protagonist to stay, that her father would abandon her and that she would be forced to flee on her own after the first 50 minutes of the film. Quite frankly, it was all I could do not to fall asleep.
