And then the time inconsistency is confusing, as follows
-----------------
Little Donnie knows the game show host
game show host has affair with cocaine addict girl
cocaine addict girl knows cop
cop helps out grown-up Donnie
----------------
how is it that all these events happen around the same time? How can little donnie be around at the same time grown-up donnie is?
this is the thing that I found frustrating. Other than this, I thought it was very enjoyable, and had some great acting. Was this review helpful? The best screenplay of the 90's(next to Pulp Fiction). P.T. Anderson is a genius. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful A classic example of great screen writing. The best casting. Sensitive portrayals. Fascinating climax. This film will be a text book for , writing and acting. The editing was weak. As much as I adore Tom Cruise, his character needed less dialogue, in order to maintain the audience's interest. Several times , I felt like I knew enough about the character and wanted them to ";shut-up"; and let the action move forward. Andersen is a GREAT Writer but he cannot let go of his words and make less say more. When he accepts stringent editing- he can become one of the best screen writersof all time. and certainly the top ";story teller."; Was this review helpful? How anyone can enjoy such a pointless, ignorant movie is far beyond my knowledge. The only reason I continued to sit there and watch it is because I wanted to see if it would ever get better, and of course, I was let down. The ending was the worst part. It was a senseless conclusion that should have been deleted from the movie, and given a better one. Although I 'm not sure the greatest ending in the world could have helped it out. In all, I consider this movie to be the worst of all time. It is what I use to compare bad movies to by saying, ";It was still better than Magnolia."; Was this review helpful? Sign In 10 out of 14 users found this helpful Posted: 10/15/2002A review of Magnolia by nineoverpar1 This movie really didn't get the public interest it deserves. A poignant tale of redemption and forgiveness of one's self, it guides you along with the soft, sensitive soundtrack and then. . . THWACK! The tenderness in the story was surprising. I expected trite characterizations based on the previews and clips I'd seen (mostly of Tom Cruise's scenes) but in fact each character was intriguing and endearing, despite their sometimes too obvious flaws. I was especially surprised at the story surrounding the cop. Its so easy to make a cop a sort of authoritarian, one-dimensional character, and in the initial scenes that is what I was being fed, but as the story progressed you felt his feelings, and even presentation of his Christian values weren't done in a trite way, but in such a way that you felt it emanated from a true belief. Strange that this should come from Hollywood. This movie, while superb in so many ways, could not be as good as it is without the excellent soundtrack by Aimee Mann. It creates the glue that weaves you through the many stories and sets the tone of the poignant story to come. Although Aimee got recognized for one song, the entire soundtrack is superb. Its a movie you can watch again and again. And to be honest, don't see this if you are a frog lover. . . Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-10 of 10 Per Page | ||
